I think 1000 gallons is way overdone, ideal world maybe, but an 8 x 3' footprint will be adequate even for an adult

what's the plan when he outgrows the rio 400?

personally the 8x3x3 footprint sounds best. Might wanna plan what else could go in too.

They grow very fast. You see lots of "middle sized" ones 6 or 7" but hardly any at 2".

Sadly you see even less at 24"
