So I am currently shopping for tanks and all the equipment for a tank I'll be starting in the next few months.  Space requirements opted toward a 30 gallon tank.  I really wanted to get a 36"x12"x16" (90x30x41cm) tank, but there are really none anywhere.  I've called every local and chain fish store in the area, and they don't have it, and are reluctant to order it for me.

What everyone has is a 30"x12"x19" (76x30x48cm) tank.  I really, really don't like the footprint of a tank of those dimensions, but this is the only suitable substitute for the size I'm trying to work with.

The difference in footprint is six inches (15cm).  Am I making too big of a fuss over this?  It's driving me mad.

They should be able to order one for you.  They just probably don't want to do it without a deposit (at least over here it would be like that)

Aqueon does a 36.3" x 12.7" x 16.8" 30 gallon (in black or oak finish)

Perhaps not what you wanted but it was the only US Brand I could find reasonably fast, that did one.

That is actually exactly the one I was looking for at.  It seems the apparent popularity of Aqueon's 29 gallon (why??) pushed the 30 gallon out of stores.  Perhaps if I mention a deposit, and they'll ship it.  :)

You could always order the glass and build it yourself.  :)

Dimensions are as important as everything else, really.  Unless you're stocking discus or angels, my opinion is that vertical space is mostly a waste.  This is compounded further when you have bottom-dwellers.

Stick to your guns and find another LFS, if necessary.

try online second hand websites
like freecycle, preloved, facebook etc.
you may be able to find the perfect tank for a fraction of brand new price.
hope this helps
