Hi everyone, I have a guppy, his name is Chad. I have had him for quite a while now and just a day ago, I noticed he had a lighter round patch in the middle of his tail. Within half an hour of noticing it, a small part of his tail had fallen off! I went to my local aquarium to ask about it and they said to add melafix and it would fix its self and be all fine but the next morning a whole hunk of this tail was gone! Just two days ago, I got a new guppy in my tank. I am not sure if this is correlated. My ammonia, nitrates and ph is all good, I also added some antibacterial (melafix). I also moved him into his own tank. Please help, I am very sad for my guppy, it has happened extremely rapidly! Will his tail grow back?

assuming the tail doesn't get infected, it should heal up without any problems.

monitor the wound and if it goes red then it has a bacterial infection. If it goes white and fluffy then it has a fungal infection.

assuming the tail doesn't get infected,
Why would it? Lots of clean water and its not a problem it will grow back.

Any open wound can get infected and since fish live in a soup of microscopic organisms containing bacteria, fungus, viruses and protozoans, the risk of infection is always there.

The big question is what caused the section of tail to come off?
