So after taking advice from other members on the forum about my barbs-they have now been rehomed by a really nice man from just down the road who seemed like a fanatic (he has 3 tanks) and he was very knowledgeable. Unfortunately I had to uproot all my plants in order for him to catch them, so then I did a whole water changed, scrubbed the glass and replanted my plants but it just doesn't look right now :( The plants aren't sitting right but i'll let them settle and see what it's like tomorrow. The platy have just been put back in, I was waiting for the clarifier to start working, it's still slightly cloudy but it will get clear.
Only one pair of platy in my tank now, they are exploring, they must be thinking to themselves-everytime we go back into this tank it's changed lol. It's looking quite empty now but if any fry survive then they will have space.
Thanks for all your help, I will keep you updated.

lol I am so tempted to stick a heater in there and get a guppy since they are so pretty.
here it is about half an hour ago, it just looks so scraggly I had it really nice aswell.

I will see what happens.
Oh betta boys have an incredible fighter for sale-it's such an unusual colour and I have never seen anything like it.

Absolutely gorgeous.

Ok so I have just told my boyfriend that I am getting a heater for the tank little does he know i'm wanting a guppy too :good:
Can someone please recommend me a small heater for my tank that doesn't cost a small country. Thanks
*edit* since the barbs have been away, the platy haven't really came out of hiding. They initially came out swimming and explored since the tanks changed again but now they have went away into hiding and even refused food. I will just leave them to it and see how they go.

For you tank which is about 40l, you will need a 50 watt heater - ebay would be a good start, you should be able to get one pretty cheap on there, try and get an adjustable one there much better.

You could always try the classifieds section here on the forums, there's normally a few advertised there.

Good luck.

Thanks I have got myself one this morning, it was the same man from yesterday, he had it in the packet unopened. I got it for a fiver and it is a 50w interpet? I put it in and within an hour the temperature was sitting at 24 that was with the lid obviously closed.
I now have guppies too :D They are the prettiest things ever. It was 3 for £5 in pets at home but when the man was catching them, one of the baby ones slipped into the bag he said he wouldn't charge me for it so I got 2 little babies and one with a red fancy tail and one that's yellow and white with red tips on the tail. They are so lovely to watch and when we got back (about an hour ago) the platy were out swimming about too-they must prefer the temp now.
Thankyou to everyone who said to go tropical. I will not be turning back now :good: I will put up pics soon. The female platy is still going to my friend once she has the babies. So I will have 4 guppies(I chose all male) and a male platy in my tank. Pics to follow.

Here are some pics.
These are the 2 babies. The one on the left is very pale yellow and has beautiful leopard spots and a tiny tail! the one on the right is a pale blue baby

lol! I should listen to you guys more :p no actually that's a bad idea i'll end up like the man who came to get the barbs yesterday -3 different setups in the living room
I've just looked over and there's nothing around they must be hiding just the babies at the front. I haven't got the water filled right to the top, it's about a cm from the top as I like the filtered water dropping into the tank and making ripples. The fish seem to like to try and swim against the current
