My Fluval Edge - My First Tank

Have you tried calling your LFS (im assuming its P.A.H) and asking them to hang on to your fish till the cycle is done? Youd have to buy some ammonia to add to your tank and swap over to fishless cycling?

Its proving to be a lot of water too, got home last night, levels were up again so changed water, up this morning a few hours ago and again levels have gone really high, changed water again, did about 90% of this morning too, not looking forward to the water bill

Not sure what P.A.H is sorry?

To be honest i dont know if i would want to put them through the stress of moving again, they all do seem to be quite happy, none are gasping for air and their colours are all very vivid, im hoping my big water changes are doing the trick

Have done some more testing today afer the 90% water change this morning

Results to date:

After 1 week with no fish

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0

This was a test by my lfs

Day 1 with fish

Ammonia - 0
PH - 8
Nitrate - 10 - 20ish couldnt tell exactly
Nitrite - 0.1

Day 2 with fish

Ammonia - 0
PH - 8
Nitrate - 50
Nitrite - 0.8

Did an 20% water change with these results

Day 3/4ish with fish

Ammonia - 0
PH - 7.5 i think
Nitrate - 50+ couldnt really tell from colour but it was over 50 for sure
Nitrite - 1.6 - 3.3 again couldnt really match an exact colour

Day 6 with fish - 3 hours after 90% water change

Ammonia - 0
PH - 7.5 - 8ish i cant tell exactly
Nitrate - 20
Nitrite - already over 0.8

I dont understand how the nitrite can be climbing so fast

P.A.H = PetsAtHome, ive seen most people with your story have been their customer!!

Have you cleaned your gravel with a gravel cleaner when your doing your water changes? Maybe its poop and food decomp in the gravel scewing your results?

Ah no, i avoided pets at home.

Yeh using the gravel cleaner when doing water changes, go right through it all too so theres no waste floating about. Just done another water change again as nitrites continue to rise, didnt want to wait till i got home from work to do it.

Giving the fish a day off from feeding today too to see if that helps. They have been fed every day so far, aprart from one, so they should be ok from what i have read.

Thanks

Matt

Just been reading through..you're doing a fab job at keeping the levels down :good:

When you do feed, just feed the fish minimal amounts, their bellys are roughly the size of their eye,so you can see they dont need much.

You'll get there in the end, just keep testing & doing Waterchanges where necessary.

It might be worth investing in some Seachem prime, this is a good dechlorinator, and will also convert small amounts of ammonia & nitrite to safe levels for the fish, whilst you go through your cycle.ebay sell it here ,it lasts quite a while, has you only need a tiny amount each w/c. :good:

Just got home from work and re-tested

so:

Day 6.5 with fish

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0.8

Over the past few days i have come home from work to see much higher levels, so it may be finally slowing down

Done another large water change so hopefully will see good readings in the morning

Hats off to ya, you're doing a great job. What we've learned from the ichthyologists over the years is that nitrite(NO2) even in tiny amounts, causes permanent nerve damage, leading to brain symptoms first and then possible death if the exposures are large enough. For the tiny exposures, the damage is there but the symptoms are usually not detectable by general observation. So this is why the work you're doing is worth it to your fish.

~~waterdrop~~

woke up this morning and got these results

Day 7 with fish

Nitrite - 0.8

So while its still climbing its not as fast as it was a few days ago.

Just finished doing another 90% water change, so i hope that will do them till i get home from work tonight

Thanks again for everyones advice

Well home from work, heres my test results

Day 7.5 with fish

Nitrite - 0.8

Have just done another 90% water change. Getting through a lot of water but it will all be worth it

Keep going!! always worth it in the end. I love my fish and I'd like to think they love me back.
Will be expecting pics as soon as you are up and running.

Til then, keep up the hard work, it's clearly paying off!

Thanks, im sure mine do, they seem to come and say hello

Day 8 with fish

Nitrite - just under 0.8

This was yesterday morning so another 90% water change was done

Day 8.5 with fish

Nitrite - Closer to 0.3 than 0.8!

This was last night so another 90% water change was done

Edit: Just done another test this morning

So:

Day 9 with fish

Nitrite - Almost 0.3

Another 90% water change has just been done :hyper:

Heres my latest results then

Day 9.5 with fish

Ammonia - 0
PH - 7.5 - 8
Nitrate - 10 or just over
Nitrite - 0.1

Soooo what do i do now? another large water change or is the system sorting this

Also took a picture but none of the fish would stay still for it
