Everyday my fish do something or something happens that I want to share, but it rarely warrants it's own thread. I've decided to start a personal thread that I can post daily happenings, that wouldn't neccesarily be important enough for a new thread. :D

I'll first tell you what my fish family consists of....I currently have a ten gallon tank which is housing two "rescue" feeder goldfish (Nermal and Arbuckle), who will move to the neighbors pond in the summer. I've only had them a few days (seeded the tank so we wouldn't have to go through another tank cycle), and have been doing partial water changes every other day (it's amazing how much poo two one-inch fish can produce).

I also have four two-gallon tanks, each with a betta resident. The newest one I got today, dark blue crowntail, and the oldest one I've had for two years (Valentine, bright red with white lining around the tail and fins). I got my green/blue/red combtail (who is still nameless) about a week ago just because. But my favorite is Midas, my long sought after yellow betta. Ever since I fell in love with bettas, I wanted a yellow one. When I found him in a chain lps, I was practically squealing with delight when I left.

And my pride and joy is my 60 gallon tank. I was lucky enough to come upon a free 60 gallon tank and stand about six or seven months ago. Current residents include a ram, a krib, angels, yo-yo loach, cories, otos, various shrimp, khuli, mollies, platys, marbled hatchetfish, and pencilfish. I adore all of my fish, but my new cories are becoming a favorite because they are so tiny right now, and always exploring the tank (and the other fish).

So, there's the intro to my "journal" thread.....the only thing to report today was that for the first time, I was finally able to save some of my mollys' fry before they were all eaten. :sly: Now in the nursery I have three pitch black fry, and one pale orange one (I'm thinking this one might have come from someone else) .

Thats a neat idea. Perhaps we can ask the mods to create a journals section !!!

Today was a bit of chaos since I had to rearrange bettas. I forgot to mention in my first post I also have a dark green betta, Peckle (he has black speckles on his fins...so cute!). What started the rehousing was Valentine's problem with the 60 gallon occupants. I previously had Eptun (my three year old betta) in my 60 gallon, and had no problems with him hurting anyone or vice versa (he seemed very happy in the 60 gallon). He was one of the first fish to actually go in the 60 gallon tank....anyway, I thought Valentine would do well in the 60, since I bought him from a place that kept in a regular tank with other fish. This morning, however, I noticed several large chunks from his fins missing (not good). So I removed him, but had no tank setup for him. I know you'll think I'm a real bad fishy-mommy for this next step, but I put him in the tank with the two small goldfish. After watching them for about 15 minutes, he starting attacking the goldfish.... :grr: So I took him out, and moved Peckle from his two gallon home and tried him with the goldfish. Much better choice. Almost 12 hours and no nipped tails or signs of aggression. I'll just keep doing water changes every other day until Peckle can get his own house (next paycheck I'll be getting ANOTHER two gallon tank) I would really like to keep him in there if they continue to get along, however. But I how messy goldfish are, and they are know to be nippers.

All of the betta tanks and the goldfish tank got plants today. "Bananna" plants for the bettas, and some other plant that I don't know the name of, but have had really good luck with it in other tanks, for the goldfish tank. The tough man Midas is, was attacking the plant ferociously (doubt he's community tank material). Still need to name the two newest bettas....

Not much going on with the 60 gallon....the babies aren't eating yet. I've been giving them food (baby brine shrimp and finely crushed flakes) three times a day. Today is everyone else's day of fasting....not very happy with me.

I'm glad to see today that my two hatchets are starting to stick around each other more. I want to get three or four more, but they are really hard to come by. My first one I got maybe a few months ago, and the other one I got just a few days ago. I've been considering just "settling" for some silver ones, but I think I'll keep waiting it out to see if I can come across some more.

My kuhli loach is desperately looking for some food (I think he thinks he missed feeding time....). He's a real active kuhli...I see him all the time, even during the day. He needs a few friends of his own too...but again, they are also very hard to come by around here.

That's all for today.

:*) Thanks!

I know what else I wanted to add...Midas is starting to change colors on me!
I noticed today that this real pretty sea foam green color is starting to appear on his fins and tail...just a little near the body. I was shocked! He's suppose to be my pure yellow betta! Well, I told him he better turn back to yellow completely, or make sure all of his fins and his tail turn completely sea foam green...I don't want any of this half-asked coloration.

Finally named the two new bettas _ the dark blue crowntail is Camelot, and the combtail is Ferdinan! :D

Lost one of the goldfish today. :/ I lectured Peckle a little (shaking my finger at him) reminding him he better not be harassing the goldfish. He just followed my finger and wiggled at me. I have not seen him chase the other one (and I never saw him chase the other one), so I don't think he is the culprit.

Went to the lfs, and came back with new occupants. :look:  I found two black kuhlis and panda cories. I'll try the pandas again...maybe now that my tank is a little more mature, they'll fair better. The kuhlis look pretty washed out, but I hope that changes after they're in my tank for awhile.

Also bought the babies some actual baby fry food. They seem to eat this better than the ground up flakes.

The cories have been racing around the tank all morning. My yo-yo loach finally has something to swim around with. I know I should have a few more with him, but all I find are little babies, and he is full grown. You can't even read the "yo-yo" in his stripes anymore. He really is a nice looking fish...very rich colors, and there is even a hint of irredesent (???spelling???) blue in the white. But all of my "established" fish do have pretty rich coloring....I really think a variety of foods (especially live and frozen) help (along with good water quality).

Today the neighbors' cat come over to visit my dog (yep, that's right...the cat same to play with my dog) :fun: She came across the 60 gallon and was entertaining herself for a long time. She'd tap on the glass and about ten fish would come over to see if she was going to be feeding them something.

So far I've only seen one of the new black kuhlis at a time (not sure if has been the same one or not). Glad to see it's (or they) or hanging around my regular kuhli.

I just love watching the cories. Always looking for something to eat, or racing each other. I'm so glad I decided to try cories again.

Right now everyone is dining on a chunk of seaweed. Most of my fish love the stuff...I highly recommend it. Something a little different for them.

I think one of my female platys is about ready to drop fry. I wish I would be lucky enough to actually see some, and save them. I have yet to get any of her fry.

I need to get more plants for the tank, and skip some more feeding in the 60 gallon. The algae is out of control. My nitrate readings are around 20. It gets so much natural light...I think that's another problem. I'm scraping the walls about once a week so the south wall isn't solid with algae. I thinka couple more otos might help too.

Unfortunately I found a type of fungus/bacteria infection on Camelott. Not sure if I caught it soon enough, but added a little PimaFix, Melafix, salt, and collidal silver to the water. Normally I would never add so much at once, but in the past this was the only combination that would save the bettas. I thank wuv everytime I use the collidal silver....thanks to her recommendation, it has saved a few of my bettas. Miracle stuff

Scrubbed the rest of the algae off the tank walls, and THEN did a partial water change (I do have my share of lucid moments now and again). Saw both of the black kuhlis today YAH!!! :hyper: :hyper: Everyday they get a little braver.

I forgot how much I liked snails until I got two (one for the goldfish and one for the tropical). Two gold mystery snails. One of my lfs has blue, ivory, and albinos as well. Not really sure the difference between ivory and albino though.  As long as none of the snails start chewing off my plants at the base they can stay...I don't even care if they eat the plants...just don't chew they off at the bottom! I had one snail that did that, and every morning, I would wake up to a surface covered in plants. So far, these snails aren't doing that.

All of the bettas and goldfish got bloodworms yesterday...big treat for all of them. Doubt they had ever had any before.

For the good, the bad, and the ugly....

Today I found both Peckle and Camelott dead. :( Both had a fungus....guess I didn't see Camelott's soon enough...and I never even noticed any of Peckle. Ugh...it just breaks my heart. :-(

Got two more otos today...already eating!

Babies are eating real well...I think they've already grown some!

Cories are just zipping around the tank. Such a lively bunch! :hyper: I should probably get another just to make it an even 10!

Nermal (the goldfish) is doing well. I love her little wiggle when she greats me. Never thought I'd be a goldfish person.

Moved my big orange and white male molly into a quarentine tank today....he was covered in ick! Poor guy...can't believe I didn't see it earlier. Looking at everyone with a flashlight and magnifying glass...no signs on ick on any of them. No one is even flicking. He's being treated with just Quick Cure for now....will do a little looking and see if I should add some salt as well.

Doing the daily headcount when I woke up and saw only one panda cory....thought the cory curse had returned, but came back with food and both were zipping around the bottom together. YAH! :hyper:

One of the black kuhlis came out for breakfast. I'm going to call a few places today to see if they have any regular or black kuhlis. I think one or two more might be nice.

Prego platy has not dropped fry yet...she's hiding alot though. She is eating however, so maybe she's not as close as I thought. I think the female sword finally got knocked up...she has a gravid spot now, and the tum is getting bigger.

Nermal looks like she has little boils underneath her skin. Have no idea what this is...have to do some investigating. She was just laying on the bottom of the tank, but then when she saw the food she perked right up. Hmmm...weird.

Midas and Ferdinan are both doing well. Looked them over really well for any sign of fungus. Nothing, so I fed them and both ate well. Held a mirror up to tanks just to see what they would do...Ferdinan just wiggled at himself...  If he wasn't a betta, I would think he wanted to play. Midas however flared immediately, and then continued to flare at his plant, snail, gravel, and every side of the tank. Guess he needed to put everything in it's place. Bettas definately have very individual personalities.

Edit: P.S. If anyone actually reads this rambling post, feel free to add any comments or critiques you have.

This journal is great. Keep the stories comming. Ferdinan and Midas sound just precious. Im having thoughts about getting a betta now.

I just got back from shopping...amazingly I only came back with one fish. Of course it's a betta  I think I have a four betta minimum requirement. He's just about every color....very pretty. No name yet...possiblt Herbert...but he's a little too exotic looking for "Herbert"

Went to a lps (chain store) they said over the phone "Oh yeah, we have some pretty good sized kuhli loaches"
Me: "Ok, great" ---gets in car and drives 30 minutes....
Practically skips in...Yah! Getting a few more kuhlis!!
Me: "Where are the kuhli loaches?"
Them: "Right there" --pointing to a tank
Me: (skipping over there) "Thanks"
-face crinkles in disappointment-
I walk back out of the store, and get in my car....they were rope fish....

I wish people would know their fish a little better....
