My first store attempted rescue

Must not be any laws for keeping fish in the UK, cause it doesn't sound like they are keeping them right there either. Betta's are just mis understood...but I think in most pet retail places all of the animals are mistreated in some way, and it is crap. Animals should be kept in the condition they would be kept at home...keeping them in undersized enclosures, and not feeding the proper diets only because they are temporaily housed there, totally gives the public that may have no knowledge of the animal...yet buys it anyway (which is also crap)...the totally wrong idea of how to keep the animal, and then that so named animal has to spend the rest of its life in crappy conditions...***WORD OF THE DAY**** crap!...lol. :kana:

I live in the UK and I have never seen Bettas kept in 'cups' over here. They are always in communal tanks. When I bought my little man today they had received 6 bettas yesterday. 1 was with guppies, 1 with sordfish the rest were with various tetras. Its the way they sell them over here, the fish hide in the corner. Apparently they sell very quickly in this shop, they are all gone by Saturday, which is why I went to choose mine today.
The best fish store near me does not stock Bettas because they say they don't have the facilities to display them separately so they won't sell them. :dunno:

Went to another local LFS yesterday with Allix and they had some more bettas.

One was in a tank with about 100 tetras :| they were taking pot shots at him

Another was in a tank with Red claw crabs

my lfs hgas loads of bettas they have cups and plastic thingys like breeder net type things on tanks but the bettas arnt in the cups very long and the treat the cups with meds aswell so its not too bad!id of walked out with him but at least you helped him

From Experience with Pets @ Home In Cov - Teh staff are Very Receptive to Info on How to Care for the Fish.

They have been on the receiveing end when I have found 2 in together or with the Danios and Tetras.

To Be Fair they do not have the room to display them in Individual Bowls. They Do Sell Very Quickly
EG - Come in on a Wednesday Evening and All Sold By Saturday.

They Also have been only Palce I have Ever found Giants and HalfGiants - but they had Made the Mistake of Keeping them with Barbs - But After a Telling Off they were Quaranteed untill Well - Which I made Sure of by Checking on them.

That Is where I Got the Idea about Opening a Specialist Betta Store - The Staff @ All the LFS LPS Have been Very encouraging and have said, they will refer customer to me.

Over here bettas aren't as popular. If you say 'I've got x bettas', most people will go 'Huh?'. Its not always that bad, they have room to swim and somewhere to hide. Tetras aren't always that nippy, everytime I've been to pets at home, I've only ever seen about 3 bettas, and I've only ever seen one nipped. That said, the prices are ridiculous. Pets at home sells bettas for £4.95 ish. They only have VTs, sometimes interesting colours but normally just red and blue. The next nearest are a similar price, however they are CT's/combtails and have very nice colours. The cheapest shop sells them for £3, but I've only ever seen red and blue.
Anyways, most are proably in better condition than they would be in a cup in Walmart, and if I did see one, I'd tell them and maybe get it.
