I got my first ever oscar yesterday, I just love them!! But I don't have a ton of experience with them, He's living in a nice 29 gallon at the moment while the 55 cycles. He has plenty of caves and plants and driftwood. I don't know much about feeding them, so if you guys could help me. Hes about 4 inches long. Should I feed him live food only, or live and other food like cichlid pellets, and how ofter should I feed him?? Thanks any other tips and advice would be great.

Here are some horrible pics of him!

my oscar loves his bloodworm cichlid pellets any other frozen foods ,, they even like prawns ,, they eat almost anything just wait till he grows u will see what i mean ,,

i give mine a few pellets in the morning as they are greedy and some frozen in the evening they always look forward to the evening feed ....
good luck with your oscar

aww... he is a cute little bugger  the ones at my store absolutely LOVE feeder minnows.

but feeder minnows aren't that good for them......... they produce a build up on the oscars liver.

feed cichlid pellets as staple diet, with things like shrimp bloodworm etc. aswel.

btw 55g is to small IMO.

:good:

yeah these guys need plenty of space to swim about ,, and they just keep on growing ,,

sam i don't think most people will see a "full grown" oscar unless you go looking very hard in their natural habitat

and yes 120+ would be an oscars heaven

no at all. oscars can easily reach there full size in an aquarium.

people jus need to stop reccomending 55G tanks for them.

it sounds cold but if you dont have the room, dont buy the fish.

no that would jus be about rite.

oscar heaven would be a lake/river.

I'm inclined to agree with Sam, my Oscar is in my 125, not quite fully grown and to be honest i couldn't envisage him in anything smaller. I know a 75 gal is widely regarded as the min size for an adult Oscar but i just couldn't do it. :/

The 55 gal would be fine temporarily, perhaps for 12 months but i would certainly look to upgrade. Just my thoughts. :)

yeah mine's in an 80g at the moment, but one of my main objectives when I move next yr is to find space for a 6 x 2 x 2 for him. I'm sure he'd cope in his current tank but he'd be much happier with more room.

Cool, your oscar has beautiful coloring BB! I know you've already heard it from enough people, but I'm also going to state that IMO 55 gallons is not really big enough for a full grown oscar. When you think about it, a standard 55 is only 12" wide, and an oscar will grow to atleast 12", but in most cases larger. It would have a hard time turning around :/
