however, i must applaud her for her more-than-average intelligence in picking the size of the tank... i've had people come into the store where i work talking about their oscars living in 10G tanks. and then they want to get more fish to put with it!!! :grr: i get so mad...

once someone came in talking about their 5 south american cichlids living in a small goldfish bowl... we eventually convinced them to get a 5 gallon tank, after telling them over and over that the fish would die without at least a 75G tank.

Wow...you really got to think whats going on in the minds of people that do this, wait, maybe I don't!

People just don't realize the adult size of some fish and the space they need. 90% of people think that fish will only grow the size of their tank and therefore they can live in a tank of any size. People just aren't educated on the issue of fishkeeping and fish/pet stores constantly give false information.

Thats usually the issue...but when somebody is told that their fish is not going to survive and needs a much bigger tank, and they buy a tiny 5 gallon tank, those people are just plain ignorant. And its just common sense to not stick 5 large fish in a tiny bowl, but some (most) people seem to lack it.

I believe her's is an albino tiger oscar (correct me if I'm wrong bettabum!) What she means by a "55 cycle" is her tank holds 55 gallons, and she is cycling it. Here, you can read up on cycling to understand what it is: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=141944 (as I am no good at explainging it!)

Be sure to overfilter the 55g tank... what kind of filter do you have in there now?

My oscar has grown reaaaaally fast... I got it on boxing day at about 2''... it's now about 5'' and really thick.. it's doubled in length and thickness.. and it's only been about 6 months.. I'm pretty surprised how quick it's grown.

I have 2 Oscars in a 120g, I usually try to vary their diet. For staple foods I rotate Hikari Cichlid pellets 1 day, and Cichlid flakes the next, with a defrosted cocktail shrimp chopped up as a bedtime treat. I have also thrown in spiders, and the occasional rinsed earthworm for live treats. I don't recommend feeder fish unless you're breeding them yourself as they can be diseased.
