well after the farting around with the fluval 2 I bought the Eheim Aquaball (internal) 2210.

This provides more filter power, which im actually happy about as im a little over stocked :)

So my thoughts on it so far:

its nice.
its LOUD - i dont deny that part of this will be the media shifting to a happy place, me getting the balance of diffuser & flow adjustment and the right place from the corners of glass etc but it is ALOT louder than the fluval.

The baskets are FANTASTIC. I've removed the sponge supplied in the bottom basket and replaced with my existing sponge and put the existing carbon in the media box along with some new to top it up. So I shall just monitor this daily for the next two weeks to then start thinking about changing over the sponge to replace with ceramic rings (nice ones costing £2.99 for a litre, never mind the £11.99 for 500ml of eheim stuff)

at this moment in time im undecided whether im happy with it or not, purely down to this noise issue. otherwise iits a fantastic product. im still buying the external Professional II for the 47 gallon tank though.

hi
just an idea.
when changeing/adding ceramic media, try Sera siporax®
it is the best bio media on the market.
1 box is equivalent to 10 tennis courts in surface area

Noise? that surprises me, i have aqua balls 2212's in all my tanks now & they're the best + quietest filter i've used infact i can't hear any noise. the only bad thing i can say about them them is the small sponge in the first basket (the one that holds the power head) clogs up fairly often reducing the flow.

Using a venturi attachment is always going to create some noise - and how loud depends on how much air gets in and at what speed it's expelled and dispersed. I have never bothered using a venturi on an internal filter as I think it's pointless and just expels any CO2 which is needed by the plants. My fish have never ever suffered ill effects from not using it.

I have a venturi attachment on both the juwel & aquaball filter in both my Rio 180's, mostly to reduce the size of the pipe prevent fish trying to swim into the filter but i'd say there's really not much noticable noise where as the wet / dry filter in my via aqua now that is annoying & soon to be replaced. Also my plant's are going crazy so much so i've planted most of my tanks using clippings from the above tanks so i don't think it makes a great difference to co2.

it is a vibration noise that im getting. though to be honest, not as worrying as the noise my car engine is making at the moment - suspected cam shaft needing replaced
Im pleased with the results so far though, less that 24 hours and the tank is looking goo

I removed that particular sponge from the top media basket and replaced with the existing active carbon. The bottom basket has existing sponge in it. middle basket is the new sponge.

cheers on the ceramic tip ;)

[edit] is that kiddy tennis court marked out on the road or real tennis court?

I also have an aquaball in my Rio 180 and apart from the venturi noise it's silent. I'm still undecided if the venturi is beneficial, can anyone shed some real light on this subject?

When I bought my Eheim, it too was noisy as well. I had written to Eheim to find out if it was normal or not. The response that I had gotten was that all Eheims are silent. So with this in mind I started looking around thinking it was air trapped inside but found the impeller axle shaft had broken in two due to a missing bearing in the housing. So I ordered a new impeller and axle shaft and it is so quiet now that I keep checking to see if it even still working, if this helps to aid in your problem. Royce

You should have been using a fluval 3 in a 20 gallon.

I use the fluval 2 in my 11 gallon, and it works well because of the extra power.

dont worry, there was a secondary filter in with the fluval 2 making up the issues :)
