I bought my first Betta on Friday and I love him already :)

I was a bit wary about getting him at first incase there were conflicts between him and the fish already in my tank (julli corydoras and glowlight danios) but there haven't been any problems at all. My boyfriend was slightly annoyed with me at first for getting him as he hates fighting fish and always refuses to let me buy one - so naturally, the first time he doesn't come fish shopping with me I end up getting him!

There haven't been any problems at all with him so far, though we ended up buying one of those smaller tanks just incase things didn't turn out too well. But so far the danios don't seem to have noticed the fact that he is there (which is strange, considering they tend to assume EVERYTHING is food) and he doesn't seem aware of them either.

He is very shy, and though he does come out and have a swim around he prefers to go and hide in places that look much too small for him! He has 'claimed' a tiny fake tree and often sits inside of it with just his head sticking out - which is just typical, considering I've had friends who want to see the new flowing and beautiful fish and all they can see is his head sticking out.

His name is Leo - for no real reason, it was just the first name that came to mind at the time! - and I really apologise for the terrible picture quality - only my mobile is around at the moment so you'll just have to put up with it until I can take some good ones of him over the week :) We're happy with Leo at the moment at least (My boyfriend is still holding a grudge against him and keeps complaining that he's quite ugly, but does like his colouring) and hopefully he'll stay such a non aggressive fish :)

Ugly?! How in the world could your BF not be charmed by those gorgeous colors?? I think he's just beautiful. Good thinking with getting the extra tank though. My little Darby was the sweetest little guy until a couple of days later, he decided to make a snack of my apple snail's antenna- something I've NEVER heard anyone report with snails and bettas, which are supposed to be quite compatible. Keep a close eye on him in the next few days. I hope it all turns out well. I was really hoping Darby could be a community fish in my 10g, but I can't complain about the company here at my computer with him in his 3g on the desk. :)

Oh pffttt.. BF doesn't know what he's talking about!
I can relate though... my bf didn't want to get any bettas when I was researching them to get for our main tank. He said that he just didn't like them.
But now.. he ALWAYS points out the ones he likes in the petstore whenever we go lol.

So your bf will come around and see the light and soon enough I bet you'll have plenty more tanks with plenty more bettas! hehe

Your lil Leo is quite a handsome fella!

your boy is absolutly adorable. how can anyone not like him?? my bf hates when i get new bettas or any fish for that matter, but soon likes them once he gets to know them a bit. i did however manage to get him to pick one lil boy out though.

My boyfriend has just always hated fighting fish for some reason. He likes his colours but thinks he has an ugly face and is quite possibly the most ungraceful fish in the world (though the latter part is true ;) ) I think he was convinced he would come home to a tank of dead fish and then Leo looking smug in the middle of it all!

I'm surprised at how well he's settled in! Apart from a few small nips at the cories when he first went in - which is understandable, seeing as he was probably terrified in this strange new tank - he hasn't reacted to any of them at all. He has taken over a small tree ornament which he doesn't like anyone else going inside, but all of the others he is fine to share. He's a bit of a strange fish as he likes to try and squeeze his way through places that are too small for him :hyper:

The danios still seem to have failed to notice his existance (which is very strange for them, they tortured the poor cories for the first half hour or so of them going in and they often try and eat my syringe when I'm doing water tests) and he isn't the slightest bit bothered by them. I'm hoping he'll stay this friendly as I don't want to seperate him and I would eventually like to put a few more fish in :)
