Hi everyone

I bought 2 golden Honey gourami's on friday last week. I did the usual and put the bag in the tank for 30 mins. I then let them out. They were rather shy hiding under the plants that evening. I already have 4 guppies in the tank who showed very little interest in them. They were roughly 25mm in size, the female was a nice pale honey colour and the male was also pale with a brown stripe running down the middle of each size. When I got home on saturday afternoon the female was dead, lying in the plants. The male seems ok and has now turned a much darker brown colour on his top half so you dont notice the stripe as much.

I bought the pair from Maidenhead aquatics in bold heath near Widnes. The have offered to replace the female if i take a sample of water and it check out ok.

I was very upset as I was excited about buying the honeys and the female was the first fish i owned that has died

Hi! HOw big is your tank? I do not know how much experience you have with gouramis, but these are territorial fish, and males will harrass females. The fact that you found your female lying in the plants could indicate that she was chased by the male. You should preferably keep gouramis in trios (1 male, 2 females) to spread out the agression. For a trio, you would need at least 20 - 25 gallons (75 - 95 litres).

We bought some fish from here on Sunday. They crapped in the bag and looked to be in a right mess when we got home which was over an hour and a half drive plus traffic, I decided to net them straight out as they looked in poor shape, they are all doing fine now although we expected to lose at least a couple. Have you checked your stats?

Great, the guy in the shop has given me another male and female gourami so i now have 2 males and 1 female. So far they are all doin ok. the males have been pretty chilled with each other and they are not hassling the female too much.

My tank water checked out fine, cycle finished about a week ago. So they gave me a free fish and i decided to add another female

I ended up in a savage traffic jam and spent 3 hours in the car with the fish wrapped in my coat. They are both ok

from what i gather, and im no expert, their behaviour will probably change. Especially when they get used to the tank. I would still recommend 2 females to every male.

You would have been better off with 3 females, and 1 male, instead of the 2:2 you have now. Hopefully everything will turn out well though..... How big is your tank? Do you have enough plants and hiding places to lay out territories?
