Well,

I have order 1 discus alredy. I am going to put that and some corycats into the tank but I still got room for one more fish. I was thinking a Angel fish at first but id rather have a Parrot fish. Is that a good idea for this sized tank? Help!

thank you,

Connor

The tank is too small for one discus let alone with any tankmates, i suggest you cancel the order and choose something smaller and more suitable for your tank size.

ooh 2 small 1 inch of fish per gal is the rule of thumb well ill probly just end of putting the discus in by itself and by the time its full gorwn ill get a bigger tank

the 1" per gallon rule only applies to small slim bodied fish.

definately not discus!

think about it. your saying you could have a 10" fish in a 10 gallon tank?

i dont think so.

if you really want discus then you need to do some serious research. if this had been done you would probably see what we mean.

Reasearch! ive bought 2 books and done hours and hours of it via internet! ive talked to many people who say that this would be fine i mean im looking at the tank right now and then picturing an adult sized discus swinmming in there fine! if it gets too small for the guy ill just buy a bigger tank. the discus im getting will only be 2-3" rite now

what books did you read?

and who have you spoken to?

i could fit my oscar in a 2ft tank and hed have space.

doesnt mean its right and its not jus the space that matters!

discus are some of the most sensitive fish going.

and if you have read books and done all this research then how come you dont kno that angels carry a disease that discus are prone too and a parrot fish is far too aggressive and fast for discus?

Do you realize though the water quality that must be obtained and kept for the succesful keeping of discus?
Yes i do understand the water quality after feeding i will do a 25% cleaning i only use bottled water with a ph of 6.5 and very low hardness. i really want one of these please just give me false hope or sumthing

Hey man no need to get angry ive talked to a fish expert at allexperts.com or sumin like that naywayz wut im trying to tell you is ill grow this 1 discus out in this tank and then ill transfer it into a bigger one when it reaches its adulthood ive heard the max size for a discus is 12" and 18" which one? also how long will it take for my discus to reach adulthood? i eamn ive done tones of reasearch but i wana juz double check on does questions. i do now that angels carry disease that discus are prone. ive also heard trying the parrot in with the discus is ok but if it starts causing trouble you have to take it out.

Do you mean you use bottled water like Dasani or something? Or you use and RO unit? And if you do use and RO unit you will need to add vital minerals and other chemicals so that the fish can live in the water you know?

No i use flowers bottled water and i will be putting in a mineral and viatimin block i add tap water and tap water treatment in there axwell.

sorry didnt mean to be.

its jus i dont see how these people are really experts if they tell you to keep a fish in a tank thats smaller than the reccomended size.

i kno the discus is only a juvie but you can never be sure when the tank size is gona start affecting its health or anything like that.

and anyone on here will tell you that you shouldnt buy a fish with the plans to get a bigger tank later.

you should get the tank first and then get the fish.

Especially because poisons get more concentrated in a smaller tank, and that would be a big problem for a Discus, not a problem for your average Guppy.

well ok i have heard that 2 but its 2 late to cancel the order has gone in and the fish is being shipped here are the demensions of the tank- 40 by 60 by 30

you really should have done more research.

how long have you kept tropical fish? have you kept them without problems? what fish did you keep? is your tank going to be planted or just ornaments and fake plants?

i would love to keep discus, and for a while i was thinking about getting them until i researched them properly and realised
a) they prefer to be in groups
B) i didn't have enough room in my tank for a group (4ftx1ftx1.5ft)
c) it is strongly advised that you have had alot of experience in fishkeeping before you even think seriously about getting discus.

I have also found out that the people on this forum always give the best of their knowledge to help stop people doing stupid things (ie putting 1 discus in a 25 gallon) and help them make better desicions to get started with (ie a small community).
