I was at my LFS today buying ghost shrimp for my oscar, and it was really crowded, so I just hung out looking at the fish and waiting for people to clear out so I could make my purchase. I happened to notice two fish in the feeder guppy tank that most certainly weren't guppies... on closer inspection, they were penicl fish, which I've wanted for quite some time but my LFS stock! :hyper:
I stared at them for a good while, still waiting for the shop to become less crowded... and suddenly, my childhood love of feeder guppies was rekindled. They're so tiny that it's like they have their own little world...
Long story short, I bought the pencil fish AND 5 guppies; one male and four females. The guppies were a pretty good excuse to buy a new 5 gallon, I thought, so I purchased that as well. The pencil fish are in with the guppies for the moment, but I'll probably be moving them into my 10 gallon. As a bonus, I found two guppy fry in with my ghost shrimp *lol*, and 5 of the shrimp escaped the jaws of my oscar to become tankmates for the guppies. It's ridiculous how happy getting a new tank makes me, even if it's just for feeder guppies :D

I used old substrate and old filter media, so it's pretty much instantly cycled... the water is still a little cloudy from the sand, but I plan to take plenty more pictures as soon as it clears up ;)
My poor fish-covered computer desk. I had to relocate my scanner to make the new tank fit

Edit: By the way, there are two more betta bowls on that desk that you can't see in the pic.... I'm so ashamed! :*)

Re-edit: New pics!!

Obviously I haven't gotten around to aquascaping it much yet... I'm going to try to find some small driftwood for it

Never ending isn't it!!! I started fish keeping Nov 2004 and already have 5 tanks :*) whoops. Just waiting for my 75g now to house the frontosa (yes I'm keeping him)

"Once you fall for fish that's the end of common sense."

Haha! I like that! It's so true :D

Congrats on your new tank! I only have a 75G, and a betta in a 1G. Most of the rooms in my house were built in the 70s (the other rooms were built in the 30s), so my floor cannot support anything other than my 75G. A really old house and a tight budget keep me from having more tanks, but just wait until I get my own place! I will have concrete floors, a fish room, and tanks scattered through out the house! Ahh.. must feed the addiction...

So true. I love feeder guppies too; I'd get some now, but I'm overwintering a small goldfish in my tank and he'd likely eat them. I do have some larger fancy guppies, though. I don't know what it is, but I like swarms and swarms of tiny fish.

do u think the tanks may smash through the glass????unless it's really thick eh..lol  i just got that same beta bowl for a friend as a house warming gift(the one with the lil foot thing) complete with a beta, :D :D it looks just as nice as yours!!!...comgrats on the new lil fishys!!!!!and babys already

I thought about that... which is one of the reasons I put them at the back of the glass, right over top of the metal supports. I can almost lift a 5 gallon though, and I weigh 97lbs and can't lift ANYTHING, so that's how I reassure myself they aren't going to break through and flood my computer. One of those tanks has already been on that desk for months, so I'm pretty sure it's safe. -_-

Maybe keep the guppies as a breeding project? get some more vegitation going on, then just let them breed and breed and breed, and see what kind of crazy coloured inbred guppies you can produce ;)

(Obviously care for each one with the love you would any other fish!)

Being the budding scientist that I am, I was actually thinking of doing a breeding project of sorts... choosing the largest guppies with the best colouration and finnage from each generation to breed, and see what I end up with after a few generations ;)
Could prove interesting... and if not, I'll have plenty of free feeders!

i think i am gonna try to get some endlers and swordtails for my 10. Either that or go Marine and have a Black Clown goby and a Clownfish. I really like the endlers though

I think the pencils may be a pair... I don't have the slightest clue how to sex pencil fish, but one's tail is much redder than the other's... what do you think?

aha... you need loaches now!! :D Looks good so far!! :)
There aren't any loaches that would be happy living in a 5 gallon, are there? That would be neat, though. I'm thinking of ordering some dwarf crayfish for it, maybe, since I'm also planning to order some dwarf livebearers soon ;)
