I'm cleaning a second hand tank and noticed it seems to have quite a lot of black mould under the sealant in the corners of the tank.  It smells a bit funny.

Can I do anything about the mould and will it do any harm?

Get the cheapest bleach you can find, i.e. Asda’s own make bleach. Mix it as per direction with water then let the tank soak for a few hours. all the grease/mould should start degrading. Then thoroughly rinse the tank with fresh water and let it air dry.

i would never use bleach or any other poisonous cleaning fluid on the inside of an aquarium....

how can you be sure you get it all out before filling it up with water for your fish?

one drop of bleach in your water = alot of dead fish

I'll give it a dang good hosing afterwards.  Bleach is basically chlorine so perhaps a chlorine strip test could help detect any residue?
