OK, so I've just made a major 2nd-hand purchase of a 6x1x1ft tank on an entertainment unit. First visit to the seller's house (she's sick of keeping fish), she said she'd throw in an old 2.5ft tank that's just sitting in the garage. Of course I said yes, wouldn't you???

Second visit to her house with my male helpers to cart it all back to my place, and we're about to go, she points out her two motorbike frogs in another 2.5ft tank, and said "you want that too? You can have it!" So now I have three new tanks for the (very good price) of the entertainment unit and large tank. :D

Problem is, I know NOTHING NADA NEIN about frogs and keeping them. She had them in very shallow water, some sand above water, with plenty of plant/rock/driftwood cover, a small fountain and a small heater (which I also got). I've left the setup alone til I find out more info.

One is an adult (apparently the other adult escaped behind a cabinet and she couldn't be stuffed retrieving it), and the other one is an offspring of the pair, about half the size. I've already named them; the large one is Xena (after my bf's Yamaha RoadStar Warrior) and the baby one is Virago (after the Yamaha V250 I'm gonna get once I win the lottery or something).

I want to keep them, I really do, but I have no idea how to go about it! What do they eat? I've heard live insects but how the heck do I catch these?!? I've offered some fish flakes but it looks untouched. They're verrrry shy... Are mealworms any good? (these I can get)

And another thing, she mentioned that when she had them out in the pond with her goldfish they used to croak vroom vroom all the time but not since she got rid of the pond and put them in the tank. I live in an apartment and so can't have a pond.

What is the best thing I can do for Xena and Virago??? :dunno:

PLEASE HELP!

PS: More dumb question from another dumb newbie coming right up! :*)

------> Can these guys swim? Would they do better in more than that inch of water that they have now? (ie. with some fish, can ya recommend any?) I'd probably make them a little beach with the water only half full in the terrarium...

------> How about with an archerfish??? The aquarium is covered with a flyscreen cover, and I've been mulling over the possibility of having a setup like this for a while.

------> Are these frogs freshwater or can they tolerate some salt like an archerfish?

------> The original owner had a mudskipper in with them (which died a few weeks ago).

What's the best option do you think?

I kinda feel obligated to look after these guys even though I inadvertantly got them, judging from the lady's "I can't be stuffed going behind the cabinet to look for the other adult, he can live or die in there for all I care", I just HAD to take them from her before she killed them from neglect or something... but I don't want them to jump from the boiling pot into the fire, so to speak. Hence all these frog-newbie questions. :dunno:

Does anyone not know? Or are my questions just too dumb to bother with? :X

BTW I went and got them some tiny crickets from the pet store today and that perked them up... but I *know* there's more to caring for frogs than feeding them...

this is the best i could find for you

M.B. Frog

P.S. listen to the sample Call, i now know why they're called motorbike frogs

and also from my reading id find the smaller one a temp home away from teh big one cause from what i read the big one might eat the small one -_-

Edit: the salt in the water would probably burn their skin

Thanks Mr Bones, that site really helps heaps.

Unfortunately, there's been no sign of the big one for a couple of days ***sob***
They have a flyscreen cover but there's a hole in it which I always cover with a light book, do you think she could have pushed her way out??? Or can they bury themselves in the sand? I have no idea where she could have got to...
