my goldfish. Because they can talk. I had a very deep relationship with Peter before he passed away, we used to have meaningful conversations. Now Lucky is the talking goldfish. All of them are very good at saying 'feed me feed me'.

Philip, my puffer also seems quite intelligent.

Talking Goldfish?… I’m not suggesting anything… but I know of some really good rehabilitation facilities if your interested….

Just checked out Birches on the Net, what a cool fish. What tank do ya need
i wouldnt go less than 55. It has to be sand bottomed and u an get some pretty active species so i would stay with the more common ones like senegals. A 75 would be better because they would have more turning around space. I cant wait to get a tank set up for them

Actually senegal bichirs can do well in a three foot tank, as they get to only a foot in length (Usually a little less)

Larger bichirs need larger tanks, there are some that get past 2' long :)

 I would say the smartest fish I have are my male bettas, and in a way my dalmation molly. She eats from my hand and will even jump for food. Although she'd eat anything I drop into the tank. My male bettas all know when I come into the room as they get all excited and come to the front of the tank window.

One of my male bettas also poses for the camera. :p

i'd have to vote for puffers as being very intelligent fish, based on their eye-development. it's my theory that fish with more sophisticated eye movements and control must have a corresponding level of mental ability. if i recall, oscars and many other cichlids also have highly developed eyes.

i've conducted tests with my puffer and the lids of his various foods. the lid he's most excited to see without fail corresponds to the food he is most interested in eating. i've never owned oscars (and probably never will) so i can't compare results across species. however, i can conclusively say that not a single other fish i own pays the slightest attention to the lids, much less to the color differences between them.

however, the guppies crowd at the feeding corner the instant a person walks into the room. they've got that part figured out at least. and my betta (RIP) used to come to the top of the water when he heard me shake his food. :dunno: that's fairly bright.

The foods I give my oscar come in very different packaging, so I don't know if he could tell the difference between lids... but he can certainly tell the difference between the packages! I usually give him Hikari Cichlid Gold pellets (red package,) but once my LFS was out, so I had to buy Hikari Cichlid Staple (green package.) I'm trying to use up the cichlid staple food, but my oscar prefers the gold by far... the red package gets him EXTREMELY excited, but he's not as enthusiastic about the green one. Of course, his fave package is the one with frozen bloodworms in it :p
I guess you could attribute that to colour preference though... but he definitely knows when I'm holding his food, no matter what package it's in.

When ever I approach the Oscar tank they come to where I am to see what's going to happen... but around 7AM or PM (feeding times) all I have to do is walk by the door to the room and they start jumping. Also if I sleep in on the weekends they start splashing by 8am to wake me up... Out of all the large cichlids that I've housed, Oscars seem to be the most intelligent/personable... but all I've really kept are large cichlids...

If you dont have a microphone, plug some headphones into the mic socket of your soundcard, turn up the record volume and bingo.

Do they definately speak out loud, or do they communicate telepathically.......Their voices in your head

yes, I think it's telepathic. Hard to explain but I definately think they talk to me. they have facial expressions as well.
