They may be very good fish just as dogs are good pets but doesnt mean the are smart. They are not reaLLY very smart, and neither are dogs. Thats why they are considered dogs of the aquarium. For an example a cat is smarter than a dog.

Oscars are by far the most intelligent fish I have owned and I've had many different kinds. I doubt this is true, but I've heard stories that in some cases an Oscar won't eat food except from their owner once they have become attached. I'm not sure if that speaks to their intelligence or their stupidy, but always found it interesting.

My Sev seems to excel in intelligence over all of my fish, he can distinguish my finger from his food :p Most of my other fish that aren't afraid of me bite my fingers a few times before they figure out what the food is
Sunny (Severum) also knows where to wait for food, who me and my Dad are, and he knows that I'll get mad if he beats up my other fish. (He figured out that I was mad at him for when he chased my gudgeon out of the tank a few months ago)

My dullest fish are my pictus cats  They like swimming in circles, hiding from the food source (ME), and freaking out+kicking up sand when I move rocks around

The most intellegent fish i have is my electric catfish which appears to have a interest in the world outside its tank, plays with items within the tank and shows signs of visable recognition when it spots me looking in its direction.

My oscar is just a big dumb lump which thinks with its stomach.

speaking of intelligent, yesterday i fed my crayfish a shrimp pellet and i have a few larger tinfoil barbs in the tank. He spat out the shrimp pellet into little pieces knowing that the barbs would come over and try to eat it and then he attacked them. Crayfish setting traps. has anything like this happened to you?
I have seen similar behaviour in crayfish before, one in a shop i sometimes use would pick up a mussel or cockle and then wave it about to attract the fish in its tank, then when they nibbled on the food the crayfish would grab them with the other claw and eat them.

well not the typical suggestion but from my limited experience of the fish I keep, maylandia lombardoi. This fish recognizes my hand and attacks it as soon as it is in the tank but remains relativley peaceful in most situations only haveing developed and deep rivalry with my hand. Also he ddi this just to piss me off I dug out all the sand near my filter intake and replaced it with fine gravel he then within a dug out all the fine gravel and replaced it with sand it looks exactly as if did nothing but he covered a foot square area in my tank back witth sand after two hours of moveing hte sand out while he bit me

Oscars are suppose to be smart fishwise. Smartest fish I have is ethier my convict I had or my female ram.

My smartest fishes are my Severum, Rainbow cichlid, and Pictus's. My pictus's go to the top of the tank to eat flake food. its pretty wierd and my severum is so trusting. I stick a net in to move a fish to quarantine or something and he'll swim right by and not hide or anything

just curiuose how do bircher rate fishy411 or cfc (edit(or dwarfs) :p )?
EDIT-> eh thanks dwarfs works for me

I'm not either of them but bichirs are in the middle of smart and dull :) They aren't as smart as cichlids but they do aknowledge you as the feeding source IME, and will eat from your hand. I only have Senegal bichirs though, it may be different with larger+less active bichir species :)

From my limited experience, I'd have to say oscars are the most intelligent fish I've owned... though I guess my oscar just about ties with my midas. My oscar recognises me, plays with items in his tank, and is just generally a very interactive fish :)
The midas is less interactive as he is somewhat shy and always has been, but he does recognise me and somehow knows that I hate it when he spits sand into the filter intake... so he waits until my back is turned to do it, then acts innocent when I turn around, annoyed by the lovely grinding noise the filter is making :sly:. I think he does it because he knows it's going to make me look at him...

For the record, nshockeyplaya, cats aren't necessarily smarter than dogs; they're just different. For example, dogs are capable of memorising many, many more commands than cats are, but cats are much more instinctual and therefore more capable of surviving without the help of humans ;)

My M Betta is probably my smartest fish, then would be my angels, they get all excited when i walk into the room. My dumbest fishes would have to be my dwarf gourmies and my glo-lite tetras
