I was thinking about this earlier and it a question occured to me about fish intelligence. We all know that fish do not have a 30 second memory , but which are the most intelligent fish. A few people I know say Cichlids or Catfish.

I would like your opinions on this matter.

The Angel fish at work seems to be the most intelligent fish, then the gourami, then the New Guinea Rainbow fish.

The Angel always goes to the top of the tank if anyone approaches, but if I go over (I feed them all), she does this sort of excited sort of tail flicking and swims back and forth quickley.

If I hold a flake just above the water she'll poke her nose out and grab the food.

The Gourami will hide most of the time at the back of the tank and only come over when I look into the tank. When he is coming over to feed he usually chases off the other fish (except the Angel).

Let me know

Work Aquarium 110L
(not my choice of fish but look after)
2 New Guinea Rainbows
1 Angel (needs to be moved before it gets big and eats tetras)
6 Neon Tetras
3 guppies
4 Corrie
4 small Golden Chinese algae eaters (need bigger home soon)
1 Red Dwarf Gourami

Well I have the same Angel behaviour - very wierd.
My Firemouth is pretty intelligent - he comes to the front of the tank when i drop the food in but as soon as the free for all starts at the front he swims to the one corner and collects all the food that is swept there by the flow from the filter outlet - he's on his own eating as much as he wants.

Apparently the 30second memory thing is now outdated and that it is estimated the average pet fish has a 3 and a half hr memory which makes sense. They also say fish can reconise a particular human from others if that human visits it regualy and wears similarly colored clothing, it can recognise that person from others.

Anyways, i wouldn't say any of my fish are particualy inteligent; probably the most inteligent fish i have is my big gold/yellow and black f.molly or my 7inch plec; they seem to show more inteligence when it comes to getting all the food of the other fish.
There is alot of competition for algae wafers in my main tank, my f.betta, corys, khuli loaches and 7inch plec all love them amoungst various other fish and my plec has worked out if he sucks of the wafer while swimming he can take it back to his cave away from the other fish.
If we're talking stupid fish, then probably my f.betta; she prefers to look at the fish flake she is about to eat for about 2minutes before uncertainly deciding to take a bite out of it(usualy by this time it has a cory or two chewing on it).

My firemouth is in a 30g with an Angel , Severum , Rams , couple of plecs and a couple of small clown loaches.
The Severum will have to go sooner or later as he will outgrow the tank but at the moment everyone is happy - got a couple more tanks to setup in the summer to split all my fish up into the correct environments

I'd definitely get one - lovely fish with a great temprement.

Are you sure they are cardinals tetras not neons, if they are neons they should be long gone eaten by an angel.

Cardinals

Notice the red stipe.

I'd agree, Firemouth are wonderful fish. Should be just about OK in a 21 gal although they do get pretty big.

Ferris mate,

how does your Red Tailed Black shark get on in the 20 GAL.

I really want one but have varied views on tank size./

Ideally I want 2 firemouths or Calvus and a RTBs

I want one too but I heard they're no good with my guppies

thats a hard choice - 2 Firemouths or a Clavus and a RTBS.
I have all 3 and i'm not sure i could pick between them.
The calvus is so cool and will be a stunner when he grows up - you can just see him in my avatar.
Firemouths are lovely fish - hard choice

Well I would say no to a pair of Firemouths unless its temporary as they do get large and in a 20g there wouldnt be enough room for them .
A Calvus is going to max out a t 6inches so you may get away with 1 with a load of rock in their as well .
To be honest if your looking at cichlids why not go for a Mini-Tang community - you coudl have some crackers in a 20g - Leleupi , Julidochromis

have a look here http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/cookie_cutter_20g.php
