moss balls

Hi.

I have these moss balls.
The name of this algae is Cladophora aegagropila.
It grows very slow.
You have turn it at times otherwise the side which is lying on the ground dies.

Shrimps like to search in it for something to eat- lots of sediments get stuck in the network.
You can clean it under the tap.

I have one as well, bought it for $10 CAN..........it got a little bigger since I bought it but not much.......my pleco doesn't care much for it.........the only one who seems to find it interesting is my betta who stares at it once in a while............its a conversation piece thats for sure..........I'm glad I have it........its different and very low maintenance, just move it around everytime you do a water change to get debris off of it and your good to go. Does anyone know if I can split it in two ?

Hi, yep you can split them. If you want to retain the ball shape you'll either have to tie the two pieces into balls or keep rolling them until they make themselves into balls. you can also open them up, flatten them out and tie to logs, rocks etc for instant 'lawn'.

I have quite a few, none of the fish eat them but the shrimps and fry eat micro organisms that are in them. they are also great if you are cycling or cloning tanks - there's loads of friendly bacteria in them, i always chuck a few in when I start a new tank.
