Moss Balls

I have seen moss balls on ebay but can't see them on any mail order plant websites. Do the moss balls do any good?

I have a few in my community tank - some of the fish like to nibble on them occaisonally, but they're the same as any other plant, just that they grow round with no roots. If you have fry, then they're ideal for them to hide in. I did try a couple in my cichlid tank, but they didn't last very long. The fish broke them up and ate most of them.

I have two and the alge seems to be reduced somewhat.

As to whether or not they do any good, this all depends on your preference. I wouldn't purchase them for the purpose of algae reduction.

I was told by a LFS that they help to reduce Nitrite.

Don't know weather this is true, as they don't seem to give true advce often (i'm slight bitter towards lfs)

Any live plants use up extra nutrients.
