Moss Ball Manipulation

Hey hey keep some and make the moss planets like i was going too :D

Wrap a ping pong ball in hairnet (dont cut holes in it, wasnt thinking and after 2 hours of work realised it would sink soon as it went intothe tank hahaahaha), put the moss on it. Tie it with fishing line/cotton or watever you would like to use. Tie a long piece of line/cotton to one part of the hair net (should probably do this prior toputting moss on) then tie the bottom of it to something like driftwood.

Hence "planets"

Whatever you pick, get some pickies.

Indir

I saw the tree idea in a LFS-looked awesome. They'd found a piece of wood with roots that looked like branches when it was inverted. Stuck a mossball on each-looked fab! I've looked for a similar piece of wood ever since but not seen one.

I've wanted to do the planets thing for ages but for some unknown reason I cannot find any ping pong balls!

You could try cutting a slit in an appropriately sized mossball and squeezing a ping pong ball inside? Not sure how well that would float but it shouldn't harm the mossball either way.

You could have a bare glass bottom, but simply get a load of mossballs and sew them together to form one big mat to cover the entire bottom in a hillocky sort of effect? You could leave gaps for placing wood or ornaments/rocks.............I might do that when I set up my 3 gal.....

Great ideas and I already have a bit of moss set a side for the "planets" Idea and have done for a while just haven't gotten around to doing it.

sorry to hijack, but what can i do?

i have loads of moss ball moss but it isnt in balls, its unravels and i have little "shards" of it etc =/ i tried making a carpet but it floated up :(

Get a piece of slate, put all your fragments of moss ball on it, then buy a cheap clear hairnet of the sort old ladies use, and stretch this over the slate, which will trap the fragments and stop them floating. Tie the net under neath tightly with some fishing line or nylon thread, and leave it to grow and hopefully mesh together.

It's the same as you would do with java moss basically.

Moss balls don't root do they?

No they just roll around in a ball or lump. But hopefully by tying them down together on the rock it will give them a chance to mesh together into a sort of mat.

I've heard a couple of nasty stories of fish getting caught up in the hair net options.... Could you use fishing line or cotton thread to criss-cross over your chosen anchor instead?

Cotton rots but fish line would work, they only get caught if you don't make the net tight.
