Need ideas on what to do with it which is less conventional then the norm as that is way to boring for me, current ideas:

Making into a cave
Laying on the substrate
making lots of little balls
making a pile of squares (add a bit of cubism to my tank :))

Anyone every sliced one of these into strips to make a grass effect, like laying turf?

i pulled one apart to make a sort of mossy carpet effect which i think looks good but never tried making grass out of it
what do you mean by making strips of grass just cutting it thinly and planting?

Yeop cutting it thinly then attaching it via the wonders of super glue to a flat medium like a clear piece of plastic and then laying over the substrate.

you could do it but wouldnt java moss or dwarf hair grass be easier

Java moss grows to tall only want 1-2cm of height and I think the moss ball would also give a nice effect due to the very high density of straight short leaves.

Yeah they grow although they do only normally get up to 2-3" in diameter, if you cut it in half Shelagh and wait 2 months you will have two balls instead of one,

open it out a little bit and put it on a stick to look like a tree; i can imagine it must look nice =]

oh cool im gonna do that then, how do you "ball" it? just wrap cotton around ot or does it do it by its self?

they naturally form into balls due to the wave action in the lake they are collected from(they roll back and forth back and forth...)...ive had several for over a year and if you dont take them and roll them in your hands to "re-ball" them every so often, they grow willy nilly...ive had two split on me due to growth and not "balling" them manually. quite hardy little things.

As strange as this may sound to some I actually think that is a brilliant idea :) and might just do that. Although it may look strange with a moss wall growing behind. You have sent my mind whirring on this idea thank you.

so would this mean i would need to have a very strong current in the tank ?

Or you would have to roll them around every once in a while.

no problem mate :) glad i could help xD remember piccies when done :p

I made a hole in the middle of my moss ball and planted one of my aquarium plants through it, I dont knpw the name of the plant-it has variegated leaves somewhat like a spider plant, but it looks great having a moss ball at its base.

Hey hey keep some and make the moss planets like i was going too :D

Wrap a ping pong ball in hairnet (dont cut holes in it, wasnt thinking and after 2 hours of work realised it would sink soon as it went intothe tank hahaahaha), put the moss on it. Tie it with fishing line/cotton or watever you would like to use. Tie a long piece of line/cotton to one part of the hair net (should probably do this prior toputting moss on) then tie the bottom of it to something like driftwood.

Hence "planets"

Whatever you pick, get some pickies.

Indir
