this story is getting old - sorry. today my happiness of getting frozen fish food ended when the frozen brine shrimp food arrived melted. here’s a picture. it’s called Bio Pure frozen food by Hikari. because it’s called “ pure” is it safe to refreeze? ughhh!

i am so sick of living in an area so small, remote and with one petco. the alternative is to drive 3 hours. not pet friendly. and so expensive to get supplies shipped. hate to say it, but when my fish die, i’m done with aquariums.

Is it still cold? If so I would put it in the freezer and it should be fine. If it is warm, I would contact the company and demand a refund or replacement.

You're welcome. I have, on a couple of occasions, left my bloodworms or krill on the counter by accident. The first time I looked up what to do about fish, if you could refreeze it. Google said yes, and I never had any problems with the fish eating the food or getting sick off of it.

the first company i received melted fish from said not to refreeze. and they might refund. but the order was delivered late and that wasn’t their fault. but i will serve the refrozen food from today. i mean they could die from no food too ?
i reordered again from my usual place- Marine Depot. i’ve spent almost $90 for shipping this week. crazy- especially because we’re retired. but my pets didn’t ask to be here- so i can’t let them die because of expence.

I can't imagine how difficult this is. I live in a small city, with a large city only about an hour away. Up until I graduated high school I lived in a small and pretty rural town (think 1500 people), but we were still only about 40 min from the small city I currently live in.

I also only have three fish with frozen/live food only. All of my others will take flake and freeze dried food. I am looking into freeze dried bloodworms for my three pea puffers, rehydration them rather than deal with frozen food. If they will accept them.

expense- correct spelling. lol
i have tried hydrating freeze dried brine shrimp, blood worms, shrimp pellets. they don’t eat them. i have frozen bloodworms and they don’t eat them either.
maybe there aren’t a lot of generations of native north american fish. so maybe they aren’t domesticated. it’s wrong and illegal to return them to their original waters. it’s up to me to provide the food they do eat. it’s ok. my pets are my only unnecessary spending. i’m not into fashion-71 yrs old. haha. i do get my hair done and teeth fixed- i’m not the stereotype hillbilly. i grew up in wisconsin. just kidding. people here are fine.

I am glad you are tanking proper care of them! I was thinking of getting dwarf sunfish, but the live foods put me off until I have my own home, rather than a rental apartment.

i missed the sunfish like bluegills in WI. they need a very big tank. the blue spotted sunfish get about 2 1/2” full grown. they come from florida areas.- so i bought them as a substitute. rainbow darters are beautiful as their name. north american river fish. worth the effort ?

If the brineshrimp was cold you might be ok because they come from salt water and have very little bacteria on them to begin with.

Did the food have an ice pack in with it?
Do they wrap it at all?
How much space is in the box?

If there's a large air pocket in the shipping container, it will warm up faster. Perhaps ask the store to wrap the frozen food in several layers of newspaper and put an ice pack in the box with it. Then get it shipped by express courier. Alternatively, buy a number of cold items so there is more frozen food to help it all remain cold.

Have you thought about growing live Daphnia, mozzie larvae and glass shrimp for your fish?

hi Colin - thanks. the box the food came in said contains dry ice. it was inside a brown paper collar around the frozen fish food. that and the food were still cold. after it was mostly frozen i gave some to my fish- they were eager to get it. back in the day maybe 20 years ago i raised some very tiny live pink - maybe shrimp. for angel fish i raised. i don’t recall what they are called. . how do i learn about raising the things you mentioned? it won’t be at lfs. so where online should i look?

also i ordered from Marine Depot- where i have ordered before. i only chose different places to get faster shipping. Marine Depot send food in a styrofoam container that comes in a cardboard box. the styrofoam is filled with clear plastic bags of dry ice. i will go back to using that store. it would be a good idea to raise live food, so i never run out. earlier i explained that my husband had taken my frozen food out of the freezer and forgot to put it back. that’s why i was completely out of food. normally i stay in stock of the food. in this case i ordered for faster shipping and could have gotten my food the regular way considering how the faster stuff was melted. learned a lesson. and will make sure my husband doesn’t rearrange the freezer without telling me. ? thanks again.
