ok heres my situation i was planing on keeping oscars and was told that i could keep 1 in a 48" x 16" x 18" and was now told that i cant.any suggestions on what other fish i can keep in there.not looking at comunity fish im looking for a large cichlid with personality. does any1 else think that this tank is to small for an oscar?only the 16" front to back of the tank? :/

if you are absolutely positive that you can be happy keeping just one fish, i recommend a Jack Dempsey. the JD is a bit smaller than an oscar but far more uniformly attractive. they seem to have a habit of killing off tankmates... however, this habit means that JDs are often available for free! check out our "Buy, Sell, Swap" section; there seems to be a new free/cheap with tank JD available every couple of months. check out your local classified ads too.

however, i am by no measure a cichlid expert, so hold off until someone else confirms or denies my advice. in the meantime, search TFF for "+jack +dempsey" and see what information turns up.

theres something about a jack dempsy that doesnt appeal to me. i dunno.maybe a more deep bodied cichlidand possibly something a little more large as jack dempsy only rarely reack 8" i was hoping more along the lines of a 9-10" fish that had a high chance of growing that large.something possibly a bit more colourful of with more appeal to it and also can be housed with other fish. jack dempsey are really agressive fish
so i duuno :S

i also currently have a synspillum or red head cichlid.possibly this could be homed with a flower horn
do flowerhorns readily reach the length of 12". oh and how do you get onto the sell buy swap thing?im new to this site..
thanks again

If you like something larger, I think a blackbelt cichlid would be a good idea...

Edit: However I now see that they can attain 16". Too large I fear.

48" x 16" x 18"
You can absolutely keep an Oscar in this tank. It's long enough, it's deep enough, and it's tall enough.

any1 know anything about flowerhorns?i dont know much about them i have heared they can reach 12" is this rare?even if so would 16" wide be enough?oh and how do you get onto the buy, swap sell thing that some1 told me about yesterday?....

scroll down to the bottom of the list of forums. there's a forum called "Buy, Sell, Swap"--just click the link and you're in
