Hi

My Husband saw a gold spotted Moray Eel in our LFS. So he decided to reserve the Eel without thinking about the other fish in our tank. I am mostly concerned about our Cat Sharks (we got 4) I think our 6 1/2x 2x2 tank is not big enough? I know Moray Eels get to about 20 inch. At the moment the Eel is about 10 inch long and about 1inch thick.
Any advise?

Thanks

Morays *can* be good community fish, but I have heard (and read) of a few instances where the moray becomes vicious towards tankmates, biting them or eating them. So approach with caution. If you go over to the Wet Web Media web site, there's an excellent article on them in their "Conscientious Fishkeeper" online magazine. Echidna spp. (which mostly eat inverts) are perhaps a better bet than Gymnothorax spp. (which are fish-eaters).

Cheers, Neale

Hi Neale

Thanks a lot.
There was a lot of interesting info about Moray Eels. After reading most of it I think I give this one a miss. I don’t want to take the risk with my other fish.

Thanks again

A well fed moray will usually just be a lazy thing sitting around waiting for the next meal.

There are some exceptions, most notable of which are the green moray and the leopard, or tessellated, moray. The greens are nasty and the tess have this horrible habit of growing up to 10 feet long and being nearly as nasty.

CFC usually has morays in his brackish tank, though they are oft G. tile or similar.
