I bought some new stuff for "tank 1" as its known. black gravel - 2 natural fern things and some mopani wood.

just wondering what i have to do with the mopani to make it safe for my fish?

they are 2 german blue rams.

Rinse it off under boiling hot water to get rid of any nasties that may be on it and pop it into the tank, it will release tannins for a while but these can be reduced with water changes or try some filter floss in your filter, but they arent harmful to fish in fact some fish are known to appreciate the tea stanined look :good:

It depends if you mind the tannins from the wood because the fish won't mind at all. If you don't mind them then like minx said rinse it under boiling water and i'd give it a brush with a stiff bristle brush to get rid of any more dirt. Then pop it in the tank. If you don't want any tannins then repeat above and then soak it in water for a week changing the water twice a day. This will release the tannins from the wood and leave your water clear. A good way to test if the tannins have been released is at the end of the week get a clear glass scoop up some of the water the woods been in. If its clear put it in the tank, if not keep soaking until the water is clear.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice.

I boiled it in a pan for 10 mins, changed water and did that a few more times. The last time i left it in for 20 mins and it was still coming out really dark! so i just put it in the tank.. LOOKS AWESOME! :D
