how long should you soak mopani bog weed before putting it in a tank? (a fishless tank)

edit to add... that should be wood not weed

As long as possible, preferably at least a week, constantly soaking in boiling water or else you could end up with a tank that looks like mine does right now :(

Thankfully its fishless cycling so I know I can change almost 100% of the water and hopefully clear it :)

crikey.... very erm, brown!

ill leave it soak a while.

having put all the plants into the tank, i dont think theres actually enough room for it :-s

I boil mine untill water is clear. Usualy 3 or so changes of water and 3 hours boiling

Yep very brown, with the lights out you cant even see inside the tank. And I boiled the pieces for a couple of days too :(

i have a bucket of bog wood that has been rinsed then soaked in fresh hot water daily for 3 weeks now, the water is still distinctly brown but much better than it was.

a few more days and i reckon it will be ready

well, I decided not to add my bog wood as i was a little greedy with the size of it.

Conveniently I have a seaside themed bathroom, so its an ornament now lol

its worth saying, as i do no end of times, this brown stuff is actually good for your fish, even better if you have inverts. the colour reduces as you continue to do your weekly water changes. so if you are worried it may harm your stock, don't! if its the colour you don't like, consider if you really want to reduce the quality of the water you have in the tank. if you do, a small filter filled with carbon will do a good job of clearing the water, remember to change the carbon every other day, minimum. but if you can, its best to leave it.

I rinsed mine under the hot tap for a bit whilst rubbing it and put in tank and its been fine hehe (im so lucky lol)
