This is quite an old report that's been around for years. There have been a number of spawning events for both this species and the common mono since that time. The surprising thing to me has been that invariably the fish have been kept in freshwater or recently acclimated to freshwater. So, while monos obviously do best in brackish to marine conditions, there's no question in my mind that they spawn in freshwater.

The problem is that messing with the salinity is a good way to stress filter bacteria, so taking a tank of monos from marine to fresh might be good for the fish (once in a while) but it'll probably kill off the filter bacteria. Which would probably kill off the fish!

Cheers,

Neale

A very good point. I guess Mr. Wey must have simplified his method to the author. I don't think a successful breeder will make this mistake. If I were to breed Mono Sabae, I might not think twice and would blindly do it. One lesson learned here, treat any article as a reference only and use it together with your own knowledge.
