Hi, I have 2 black lyre tailed mollies with a bunch of other fish in my tank.

I noticed today that one of them has a swollen eye and it has turned a white kinda colour. If someone knows what this is and can help please do as these are one of my favourite fish in my tank

Thanks in advance

I think some more information is necessary...
How big is your tank?
Exactly how many of and what other kinds of fish do you have in the tank?
How long has it been up and running?
How often and how large are your water changes?
Do you have a test kit for your tank and know your water parameters?

It sounds to me like your fish has pop-eye. It is a bacterial infection that can be caused by various organisms, it is typically brought on by poor water quality and stress. Pop-eye tends to be a symptom of other infections, rather than being a singular problem on it's own.
I recommend doing a 50 % water change as soon as you can, and purchasing a general bacterial treatment from a local pet shop if you can.
Also adding some aquarium salt is generally a good idea, as mollies like slightly salty water. (This is not recommended if you have Cory's or other scaleless fish in your tank, but just list your stock and we'll see if adding some salt would be a good idea in your case)

Thank you for the reply.

Here is a link to my earlier thread in the new freshwater tank section. It lists my stock, water quality
and tank size.

Thanks again.

Cories and upside down catfish won't tolerate the salt, so don't do that at all.

I've only ever had 2 species of fish with popeye - mollies and my Limia Tridens (my avatar fish), who are very similar to mollies. I think the mollies are particularly susceptible to it, certainly when it's only in the one eye. The Limia has only ever suffered the once, whereas when I kept mollies, I reckon they all had it at one point or another.

Daily water changes for a few days, and it always went away on its own for me, no bacterial meds used at all.

Thanks that has eased my mind alot. How much water shud be changed daily? I have a 15gallon tank.

25-30%, which in your case would be about 4 gallons.

Hi people,

I lost this Mollie today just before second water change

. I got my water checked in my LFS and it is fine. All my readings at 0. Maybe it just wasn't to be.

Thanks again for the help.

i am sorry for the loss of your fish as i have lost a few mollies and a platy to pop-eye. when i see a fish with pop-eye i separate it immediately. depending on how bad the fish is, it either is medicated or goes to sleep in the freezer

is it like ick spots or like as if the slime coat is thicker in one area?

There not like spots but more of a discolouration of the scales/skin in small places. I think it might have started near the gills if that helps??

Hi again people.

So since I started this post I have lost 3 mollies(2black, 1white)

. I have 1 left but I fear it is on the way out.

Could anybody tell me what is wrong from this picture?

well, it is on its way out :( it has clamped fins, and there appears to be scales missing on the body and some redness on the tail. i dont think the red on the trail is red pest bacuse it doesnt look like it. i hand had fish with red pest and it looks like their 'arm pits' are bloody and they have red veins going down their fins.

this is not my picture but the only decent one i could find of red pest

i dont think there is much for you to do. i would just add some salt and i would get her out of the breeder trap because those tend to stress out fish. if you dont want to do that you can look at my thread called 'how do you end suffering fish?' to find a way for put her to sleep :/

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately it didn't make it

Any more help appreciated.
