Modify Filter Tube

Is it ok to shorten a filter tube a few inches? I bought an Eclipse 6g w/ built in filtration. Does the suction need to be near the bottom for optimum filtration? I just wondering as it would give the tank a cleaner look but I don't want to sacrifice water quality any.

All the water gets circulated eventually where ever the tube starts. I lopped a good couple of inches off my small tank so disturbed sand doesn't get suck up
