Has anyone had experience of mixing blennies of genus with Ecsenius blennies of the Salarias genus? Particularly a Bi-colour Blenny and a Starry Blenny. I have a 2.5-3" Bi-colour at the moment and have done for nealy 2 years. I want to add a 1.5-2" Starry Blenny to the tank and was hoping that because they are such different shaped and coloured blennies that they will get on.

i'm not very good with genus's and scientific names so not sure if the ones we have fall into the groups you are thinking of, but as you've had no other responses i'll tell you about our in the hope it's helpful!!

however we have two blennies in our 30 gal and it works just fine.

one is a tail spot blenny and the other we have struggled to get a proper ID on, closest we have found in our research is a bi-colour however the lfs claim this is not what he is and insist he is a flame tail blenny, we've never been able to find a scientific name for him though.

however in terms of markings and temprement they are pretty different, the 'flame tail' is definatley more aggressive and is blue and yellow, the tail spot is much more of a softy and a nice orange colour with pretty markings. Initially there was some squabbling over territories however this was resolved within a few days and I think was really my fault for releasing them after acclimitisation at the same end of the tank. Good 3/4 months on and both get plenty of food, we never see any fighting anymore (flame tail occasionally bares his teeth at any other fish coming near his food but soon has plenty to eat and leaves everyone else to it) and they both seem quite happy.

Thanks!

The blenny you have might be one of the mimic blennies that looks very much like a bi-colour blenny but has a slightly different shape.

I think Im going to give it a go mixing these species as they are so different Im hoping they will be fine.

interesting, i'll look that up, I'd love to get a proper ID for him.

Well unfortunately my bi-colour has died after a very sudden and agressive outburst of whitespot that has also taken my yellow-eye tang and my twinspot goby has dissapeared aswell. Totally gutted and can't find a cause. Once im happy the tank has settled I still plan to get a starry blenny though.

I know how you feel; happened to me two bloody times. I find that it happens when the tank oversteps an unwritten rule of stock levels; I have read of numerous similar situations. I had a fully stocked tank die of several different diseases even when there was a UV sterilizer on the tank.

well now my royal gramma has dissapeared and my clown is on his way out. Think im going to be left with my blue pipefish and peacock wrasse by the looks of things. Hope they stay ok..

Ben

I battle whitespot by never putting the LFS water into yours.
For your clown, do hyposalinity. I had a pair absolutley covered, i put them in a tank with a SG of 1.019 and eventually lowered it to 1.010. Clown didnt show any signs of stress one bit. I also used a garlic diet in this time. Seems outrages, but works wonders. I also did that when they were juvi's they are 2 years old now. Sorry mate whitespot really does suck. I found that my peppermint shrimp did an excellent job at whitespot. EVERYONE says no they dont eat it, but if u watch closesly, they pick it off. Then you got your UV filter and BAM. Or a FW dip. There are heaps of ways. keep us updated.
