I have some betta fry that are 2 days old. Some have started free-swimming. I put in some baby brine shrimp, will they be too small to eat it? I have read that some people have raised betta fry on bbs from day one with no problem. What should I do?

It'll be fine, they should be able to eat them :)

phew! That is what I hoped I didnt want them to starve. Well I put the bbs in awhile back and a few hours later when I checked on the fry I didnt see any more bbs that I could see! So I am pretty sure they are eating them. But not positive. I put a little more in. Most are free-swimming somewhat. But by tomorrow morning they all will be. I do have a couple dead ones though :/ some die off. I have a turkey baster that I could squeeze them out with. Should I do that? I was going to get the turkey baster then get the dead ones out and just to make sure I dont get any live ones. I will squeeze it into a container. The funny thing is that the bbs are frozen bbs from hikari. I didnt think they would eat them that quick. It came in thoes cubed packets. I didnt use all of one cube yet, I just put aquarium water in a container and let it thaw. Do you think I can refreeze it?

Hmmm I have never used frozen BBS, only live. You might have trouble getting them to eat non-live food this young.

I know. I am growing some infusoria right now. It should be done tomorrow. I cant really tell if they have eatin it or not. Just before I could see the brine now I cant. I even took the turkey baster to move the water around just to make sure it didnt float to the bottom. Do you think I could refreeze the brine?

i wouldnt refreeze if it has been frozen once. good luck. ps how do you grow the live things. point me to a thread please :)

Well I guess the fry are free-swimming, but most are just sitting the top of the water not swimming. Should I be worried?

Okay if the bettas are free swiming (usually you'll know because they're not at the nest and you can actually see them scooting along) then I would go to the lfs to get some live bbs. They seems to eat things that move better. (so no frozen)

When you get home put the live bbs in a jar and take that trust turket baster and squirt some live bbs in there.

Or better yet!

Take a egg - boil it. Take the a piece of the yoke and put that in a squirt bottle with some de-chor H20 and shake it. Make sure it's mixed well and that it's on the mist setting and do a couple sprays of that.

You can feed the fry that for a couple days while you start your bbs hatchery. There's a thread on how to do a hatchery.

When did you remove the papa?? Is he still in there?? I keep the dad in for a long time so he can cull the babies if they aren't right (as swimming proper or whatever) Plus after a couple days he'll start to eat the bbs with the fry.

The lfs I think only sells adult brine shrimp, but I will call when they open. I have some infusoria growing it is that good? its almost done. I removed the male awhile ago. He ate some of the fry, but I got him before it was too bad.

Instead of that frozen bbs. I hatched some live bbs and they are eating it! There stomachs are orange and everything. I am so excited. Some of the fry still cant get to the bbs though and they are trying really hard too they will dart at them really quick and come up with nothing  . But actually I am a little concerned about the ones that cant get anything, hopefully they will get some and they wont die. At the end of a spawn how many fry do you all usually end up with on average?

Well done on hatching the BBS :good:

I like to put some microworms in for the ones that are too small and struggling with bbs, but to be honest, they soon get the hang of it :D

Average die off rate is around 10% if tha,t unless of course disease strikes
