Hi,

Just wondered if anybody could give me an idea as to the minimum tank size for boesmani rainbows?

Reading the species index on the forum it states 20-30gal, whereas elsewhere I've read 40gal+ so wondered if anybody could give their opinions from personal experience?

Reason is I've currently got a 25gal tank cycling, 32" x 12" x 15" and am planning on cherry shrimp, khuli loach and a shoaling fish (hopefully boesmani rainbows lol) will probably use the rainbows as the centrepiece to the tank if people think its possible.

I think its about 50G but others will know better. Threadfin rainbows will work in a 25G.

Thanks kizno1, not quite keen on the threadfins, as I want the shoalers to be centrepiece I'm looking for something with plenty of colour.

I was originally going to put an apisto or tapajos orange head in as centrepiece but have since decided I wanted cherry shrimp and I dont want them to become lunch

I dont think there are any other rainbows that will wrok i think dwarfs get to big. O yh i remember that tread. What about a pair of bigger killis or a bigger type of barbs like Odessa Barb or Golden barbs.

Hi

Thanks kizno, I like the look of some of the killifish, hadn't though of them before to be honest.

Dont suppose you know the scientific name for the killi below? just found it on google images

Have you concidered Dwarf Neon Rainbows? I have a 47G and wish i'd gone for these instead of the Boesemani's that i did buy. Hope this helps.

Nothobranchius rachovii. They should be fine aslong as you dont have any nippy fish in the tank

The tanks to small for dwarfs IMO

They look quite nice as well verminator.

Just out of interest, what fish is that on ur avatar? Thought it was a electric blue JD at first but wasnt sure lol

Andy

Thanks kizno,

Have found they also go by name of Nothobranchius rachovii so will have a read up on these.

I have another tank, 33 gal which I am looking for a shoaling fish for, current occupants are as follows:

2 bolivian rams (both female I believe)
Trio of apistogramma cacatuoide double red (1m,2f)
2 swordtails (1m,1f)
Albino rainbow shark
7 sterbai cory
BN plec

Do you think the killis would work in this tank also?

Andy

Mine have done fine with apisto. Im not sure how the sword would be with them swords can be a little nippy and pushy sometime IME. Yh i got mixed up on the scientific name i changed it before you posted but you must have seen it before i posted. The name you have is the main one :good:

Thanks kizno1,

Its hard planning a new tank lol, there are so many nice fish out there to choose from. Reading up on the killis it says that more than 1 male in the tank will often fight which isn't ideal as it seems the males are the most colourful, also found conflicting info on this as another site says a larger group of males will get along whereas the first site said 1 male to 6 female.

What ratio do you have kizno?

Andy

Ive got a pair 1m 1f because my other female died and i cant find anymore. In a 25G i think you could get away with 2 males 4-6 females.

Thanks kizno,

I'll have to have a look and see if my local maidenhead aquatics stock them. Knowing me I'll change my mind again before the fishless cycles finished  Like I said, too many nice fish to choose from.

I think for the 33 gal which is moderately planted I'll stick to my original thought of a shoal of hengeli rasbora.

Andy

Sounds good to me :good:
I know what you mean about keep changing your mind ive decided to sell all my fish a pair from the apisto and bns that will get tanks of there own then get a pair of dwarf pike for a 21G and a pair of snakeheads for my 30G

Yeah i remember reading your post the other day about the dwarf pikes.

I cant wait to move house in the next few years so I have room for a 6x2x2 or 7x2x2.5 as I want to keep an oscar and sevs etc, also would have more room for other tanks as I'd also like a malawi tank

Do you know anything about the tapajos orange heads?

Think I may go with 1 of them as a centrepiece fish, shoal of killis but prob keep to just 1 male to be safe with maybe 9 females?

Then 6 khulis and cherry shrimp for bottom.
