Minimum Size

The minimum size for a Betta is one gallon. One fish per one gallon is fine. If more then you would want to go with a minimum of a five gallon tank with 3 females.

Sorry but 3 females is a very bad idea

You don't have to agree with me. It works everytime I decide to put three together, if they fight, then separate them. Not all females are ok with other females.

I think is the exception rather than the rule, like a male betta getting along in a community of small nippy fish. So if you are lucky in that way, that's good, not sure I recommend these conditions to a beginner though.

I have a 20g tank, with fish in it already. I've had one betta in there (male) but he recently died. Anyone have suggestions on putting say, more than one female in there? My male betta got along fine with other fish.

Depends how many you want. I currently have 2 females in a 5.5 gallon. I only had ever have had 1 little fraying. And that was because I put a male too close and Zara started getting barred. Poor little rain got frayed edges that time. And then another time when I was feeding BS and I guess rain looked like a giant one right infront of Zara's nose. That time she got a little chip taken out, but it is growing back quickly and nicely. They never purposely bully each other. Unless I skip a few feedings. Then Rain (who is the weaker one) always looks like a giant piece of food and has to run for cover. I guess it all kind of depends on the fish
I wouldn't keep one alone. Zara got too depressed by herself. And now seems to enjoy Rain as company. (gosh I just realized I am telling my life story here(well actually my girls' life stories))

I would say 1 female per 1-2 gallons. Starting with a minimumm of 5 gallons

same rule applies for female bettas as it does with every other fish. I think the general rule is 1gal per 1inch of fish. The most important thing is that you have lots of nice hiding places so they can get out of each others way
Just rember, a 3 inch gourami puts out more waste than a 3 inch pencilfish. As to min sorority size, yes, ten gallons.
