Betta, shrimps, plants and your set.

My betta was fine in a community tank for almost a year and it was fine. Then i moved it to my 55 and it killed my favorite swordtail within an hour

Actually you can put in lots with a Betta, some people can be narrow minded. Gourami's especially Dwarfs would be fine in a smaller tank, I currently have two coral blue's in with a female Betta and they get along really well. Another much larger tank houses a male Betta with a variety of other fish including two gourami's a blue and a 3 spot. Good luck and have fun!

I have a prodominately Sth EAst Asian tank set up, but yeah, you will really need a much larger tank to keep some asian fish in.

I cant see a prob with the betta idea though! And they woiuld really appreciate some plants. Hygrophila polysperma and Ambulia are from asia and are low maintenance easy groewn plants. :)

Yes, but we're talking about 5.5g. It also depends on the temperment of the betta.

Are you set on the betta? 4 spotted rasbora and a honey gourami (or dwarf if you preffer but honeys are slightly smaller and less likely to cause trouble) would work instead or you could go for a pair or possibly a trio if it's well-planted) of honeys and put some shrimp or a snail in with them in place of the rasboras. The spotted rasboras would be fine even if they are in such a small school. They do very well in most conditions IME and the school is less important if the tank feels secure for them (lots of plants, no predators, stable environment).

I realise that, I was speaking more in general. I wasn't suggesting putting larger gourami in, a dwarf would be better because of size considerations. But say it was decided in the future that a large Asian style tank be set up, then larger gourami could be fine. And temper matters, as I have stated in many posts, again I was speaking generally. A 5.5 g could handle a Betta a dwarf Gourami and a small cat fish and plants in it = nice little eco system.

well, they would only be in there for like 2 days maybe, then go into my 55 gallon.

I was going to get rasboras last night while I was at the fish store, but they were $5 each!

I you want to do a biotope or at least biotype Crypts and Valliniseria are appropriate. Betta are found in the Mekong River system. So are Pearl Danio and Blue Danio which are found also in rice paddies, canals, backwater pools like Betta. You would need a good size tank as they need room to avoid the Betta and vice versa. Some Danio, unlike Zebra, can be kept as a male/female pair but I forget whether it is Pearl or Blue. More is still better.

A good website is

http://mongabay.co/fish/biotope.htm

It gives suggestions for biotope aquaria and you can link to a page for a specific country or river system and see lists of all the native fish. You can click on the fish name for detail about it and it's habitat....if you like that much research. Also there are lots of pictures of real biotopes and some biotope aquaria. The 'Thai Creek' and 'Asian Blackwater' areas will be the best bets.

If you have a colour printer you can print pictures of plants and rocks and glue (decoupage) them to your background..unless you have to draw it.
