It seems the del is going through danios at an alarming rate, I only have one left now :/ Note, they are not intended as feeder fish, they are meant to be filling the tank out a bit while the cats, del, eel and knife are small and nocturnal. So evidently, I want something cheap, preferably active so they make the tank look more full, and something that is either huge when you buy it, or really small so there is no risk of him hurting himself when he tries to have snack time. Any suggestions?

mollys???? there asctive and grow to 3 inches and have a chunky (compaird to a danio) body

mollies often get diseases when not kept in brackish water remember.

:good:

I was going to say African Butterfly fish, but they're probably the least active fish...ever.

halfbeaks would be my recommendation!

Nah, halfbeaks would go down his gullet like... something that he can really easilly eat. I'm off to the lfs in a bit, so I'll see what they've got. Perfect time to stock up all my tanks, I've got plenty of tanks/containers lying around :shifty:

Update. I bought a laod of black widow tetras, my reasoning being they are very tall bodied (wider than dels mouth) so should be fairly safe. I now seem to have at least 5 less than I did last week, and last night I saw him hunting. The prey went down in one go... Needless to say, 'Oops' was a thought I had... Luckilly the ones left, bar one, are fairly big, so they should be harder for him to get. So I'm still after viable options. I need fish that are ourchased at a large size. One shop has some large scissortail rasboras in, I might also get a RTBS as the same shop has some large ones of them. I think now though is time to start investing in some of the larger mid dwellers I was going to get, geophagi for instance.

Gouramis are the only thing I can think of that are somewhat large when bought, though I don't think they are what you are looking for. :/

What about giant danios? I am thinking you had zebra danios, but thier larger cousins are a bit... larger. :p They are still rather slim bodied, though. :/

Hmm, possibly giant danios, although I'll check how big their sale size is.. I'm thinknig it's still fairly small. And gouramis are boring and aren't something that can be kept in large groups like I'm after. They're also expensive.

Though I'm sure you already thought of this, do you have a hospital tank or something you could let them grow up a bit in, and then put them in the tank?

Yeah, gouramis don't usually do groups. For some reason I don't remember them being that expensive here, but they aren't what you are looking for anyway, sooooo..... :sly:

Maybe if there is a type of fish that you like and would work when full grown, but the sale size is too small, you could find someone wanting to re-home some of that kind, or perhaps you could find a breeder willing to part with a few adults.

LOL, that would be silly, del is growing too so by the time the tetras are too large to be eaten by a 5" del, del will be 7/8" :p Plus by them the two dwarf giraffes might have caught up a bit and started to get predatory...
