Meet Jaws.

Thanks for all that info Kamber, :good:

Have just been offered a 5 foot tank for free. So not sure what to do. Do i spend a fortune buying a 6 footer or take the 5 footer for free. hmmmmm.

Take the 5ft :) and spend the cash u save on perhaps a nice external filter for it if it doesn't already come with one.

Yeah i just might do that. he said he has started using stingray pumps? and not sure if he keeping it or giving it with tank

Not sure what a stingray pump is?

Its an internal filter shaped like a stingray, i have one on one of my 60 litre tanks its getting replaced by an eheim very soon as it isn't brilliant (doesnt seal properly around the unit, so it sucks in water from everywhere not just the bottom intake with the sponge in).

Ah i see. I would be able to put my external 305 into new tank and get another filter aswell.

a 305 would be ok, but Id add a 405 to the tank as well, I has two 405 on my 4x2x2.
Very good filters, I've had no issues with them and they've been running for about 12months, everyone i spoke said they hated the fluval externals, but they had all use the 04 series, so seems the 05 series is much better.

I'd go with the Tetratec EX1200, i have both this and a fluval 405, the 405 is a good filter with slightly better flow rate than the ex1200, but the ex1200 is cheaper and quieter, i also like the hosing and the spray bar option u get with the ex1200. Either will do and you can then sustain a higher bio load as your fish get bigger :)

To Be totally honest. I dont not like the 305. I used to use a Eheim 2217 before and found that so much better. My Lps says i can put a spray bar onto 305 which i am going to try and see if i find it better then.

hmm... if you have room, get both tanks :D

convert the fish in your roma to the 5ft tank, and use the 6ft tank as the bala shark tank :)

that's what I'd do if I had the money you did and the space :)

you dont have live plants so i dont see any point in the spray bar. IYO whats wrong with the 305s? Ive had no issues, just wondered why you dont like them.

As for the tetra extrenals, they have a really fragile looking bend to hook over the side of the tank, and if you have a decent hood on a large tank (like on my 6x2x2, which has a wooden lid) the bend just wouldnt fit, and they also use smooth clear pipes which are very thin, so they have to pump harder to get the same water through put as a fluval which has larger pipes.

there was one make which if Id had to the cash for i would have probablly gotten instead of the fluvals, as they have built in heaters, but they con you by not providing the filter media, which is so damned expensive it seem pointless owning one of the filters. For the life of me i cant remeber what brand they were

I Do have live plants in my tank.

I just feel that the flow is rubbish, and the inlet doesnt suck up as much crap as the Eheim did. But that is just my opinion of it.

I run a fluval internal 3 plus in tanks aswell as 305.

as i said earlyer i have a 5 foot tank with three bala's in it and have just ordered a tetra tec 1200 and a tetra tec 700 to run together in it. ordered them online for £160 for both with free delivery. am patiently waiting for them as we speak!!!
i got these after speaking to my local fish shop and this is what he ran his display tank on, which always looks good.
nath1.

Is that cheap? sorry not looked they filters up.

Are you gonna eventually put your Balas in a 6 foot tank? As alot of people on here say 6ft min for balas but then i see so many people on here with their bala's in 5 foots.

I don't agree with what you said about the tetratec externals, the pipes are not thinner (not on the ex1200 anyway!), they are however clear and smooth, which is better than the ribbed fluval design (imho) due to the fact that ribs get crap stuck in them, which when purged with air (every time u clean it) gets thrown out of the pipes. The tetratec pipes are also much easier to clean! Furthermore when it came to add a UV stelizer it had to be the tetratec that took it because the crappy ribbed pipes from fluval only have 2 rubber ends supplied with them so using a jubilee clip onto ribbed piping to make a nice seal hmmm, i didn't even want to risk it leaking 450 litres all over my front room.
I run both units on the same tank side by side, and i clean them once every week (mainly to rinse the polywool/polyfilter or replace it if its too clogged).
They are a good filter, my main issue with my 405 is that is noiser than the other externals, once the air has been purged the tetratec is silent the 405 is like an old air pump droning away, that and the carbon they supply is clearly from another hagen filter which doesn't fit correctly in the unit.

If you also take in to account the price, you can pick up an ex1200 for £65 now 405s are £80.

Could be the aquaone filter with built in heater and UV... Aquis range?
