Meet Jaws.

Nice size tank, and as for the pleco you may have some trouble. But you could put rocks around your plants, so the pleco is unable to root them up? Get what I mean?

Yeah I would've thought the shark would've gone for the tetra's too... unless they came out pace him and hide in places he cannot reach?

Nah he was swimming along side them all. He might just be a really friendly shark? :)

Will have to think about plec. Might just keep my 4 clown loaches for bottom dwellers

Yeah maybe.

Yeah you could put some clowns in there.

I'm not sure if some corys would work or some otto's? They may be too small.

he will be happyer when he has friends, also they can be quite scatty, fun to watch. looking forward to the pics of your 6ft'er when you get it up and running. :good:

Will have to get deciding soon what elese i wanna put in :)

What would everyone else stock in a 6 footer with 3 bala's?

Zoe

I'd get a decent sized shoal of Siamese algae eaters, maybe 10. They are good looking and active shoaling fish that also happen to do a good job at cleaning algae.

Some good sized cichlids, certainly I'd have a firemouth (which I think are stunning fish), but there's tonnes to choose from. Kissing gouramis would be cool too.

For the bottom, your clown loaches + some sort of catfish, maybe a featherfin synodo and a shoal of a larger Brochis species.

Halfbeaks and/or some larger hatchet fish for the top of the tank.

You could also keep it empty and take fish from people who's tanks are too small, not as fun though.

You have TONNES of options :D.

Why not try a albino oscar?

Or would the oscar be too large for the sharks?
If so,

Frontosa cichlids are quite nice :)
Or some datnoids?

Hello scotslasszoe,

I have three bala's in a 5x2x2 and they get along great(a little scatty a times). mine are in with 3 clown loach, 2 frontosa, some angels and gourami's and a few bottom dwellers. they are very gentle although do chase each other around alot at feeding time. i added my third, who was smaller, later than the other two and had no problems. Mine are now 8", 7" and 5".

Bala's are peaceful, they won't go round ripping bits off your other fish (they may swallow a few small tetras if hungry or bored when big tho).
Yeah the SAE's are great if you get the genuine ones (there are 3 types similar) My SAE shoals WITH the 4 balas i have!

* Siamese algae eater = real Siamese algae eater = SAE = Crossocheilus siamensis
* False Siamese algae eater = Siamese algae eater = Thai flying fox = Siamese flying fox = colorful flying fox = false SAE = Epalzeorhynchos sp. or Garra taeniata (they do not know)
* Flying fox = trunk barb = Epalzeorhychos kalopterus

It seems that most places label these as "flying foxes" or SAE's and they are often mixed together because they look very similar.

Siamese Algae Eater or SAE:
The true SAE has a jagged black horizontal stripe that goes all the way to the tip of the tail. All of the SAE's fins are clear. The black and white and their contrast are more intense than with the other algae eaters below.

False Siamese Algae Eater or false SAE:
The false SAE if usually found in shipments of true SAE (or the other way around). Unlike the SAE, the black stripe ends at the beginning of the tail. Often, if one goes to buy SAE's in a US aquarium store, they may in fact be all or mostly false SAE's. False SAE's may have some red around the mouth and a yellow tint to the fins. My false SAE had some nice gold and red on the dorsal fin. Mine was sold as a flying fox.

Flying Fox:
Just like the true SAE, the flying fox has a black horizontal stripe that goes all the way to the tip of the tail. Unlike the SAE, the edges of the stripe are smooth and not zagged. The flying fox may have some rainbow-like coloring on the fins. It is more pretty than the other fish mentioned on this page. The black horizontal stripe extends to the end of the tail like the SAE but it is much stronger and broader.

From what i read when i researched this a while ago, only the true SAE will bother with algae when adult the other 2 may when young, also the other 2 are more agressive (which seems to be correct from what i have seen).

This is a pic of my false one in my 165litre tank.

Its almost black on the top, the real one is more dark grey/silver with dark lines where the scales are, it also has the black centre stripe all the way to the tip of tail as described above.

Anyway the SAE's mix well with balas :) Can't wait to see your new tank up and running, i'm sure it will be awesome :good:
