Media Suggestions For Marineland Emperor 400

My brother just bought a Marineland Emperor 400 for his tank.

What is the best media to use in the extra compartments?

I was thinking of these:
Hagen Fluval Biomax Filter Media
and also some floss

And last. He said the sponge has a hard back. How does he clean it out? Should he make his own spoung instead of using this one?

I haven't seen this filter so not completely sure what is best. He is coming over tonight for me to look at it so I thought I would get some ideas first.

I have an emporer 400, and I just re-use the inserts. WHen they get clogged, just swish them in old tank water to get most of the crud off. Most of the bacteria live on the bio-wheels.

The empty containers that go into the extra slot get filled with biomax in mine. Any of the moderately small ceramic type media should do well in the extra basket.
