a while back I made a post about how I adopted some neglected cichlids; a green terror and a jack dempsey. Well, I just got my paws on a nifty 80 gallon setup, rehomed my plec, and while that's cycling, I have to ask, now that I have the room, who should I keep them with? Any good oddball suggestions? I'm a huge black ghost knifefish fan, but would my boys be a little bit too boisterous? I kind of think they would, but am hoping for a second opinion before I dare try it.

I'm just so bloody sick of cichlids XD no more, please.

An 80g is too small of a tank to add anything else to it, imo.

Why would a 80G be to small?

Try a clown knife they will go with em
a clown knife? but dont they grow too large?

and I dont think that the tank will be too small. The poor things grew up in a thirty, but I guess you had know way of knowing. They're both around seven inches, I'd say, and I also reckon they've been stunted. : (

You should have kept the plec! 80 Gal is tight for the fish, but i've done worse, a lot of TLC and some luck will guarantee they will stay happy and healthy in your 80 gallons. No reason why you can't add more for now - once they start growing and you get more attached it will give you the motivation to save and get even a bigger tank!

Everyone has and is entitled to their own opinion - but you are always the real expert in your own aquarium since you are the only one observing it all the time. Full grown plec are far more interesting than juveniles - Mine beame so active that he stop feeding on the bottom - he joined the oscar/devil/ and arowana eating from the surface. They all reached full sized with the exception of the arowana ( he was 2.5 feet and most silvers should have gotten to 3ft) within 4 years, i had them for a total of 6yrs before we sold them back to a LFS. They were housed in a 65 gallon long aquarium (48X18). Good luck with your choices and post some pics!

you had a silver arrowana in a 65g for 3 years?

......anyway.

vial, you could maybe add a small group of clown loaches?

give them a nice pile of rocks to hide in (literally a pile lol cos they jus squeeze in the cracks clown loach sandwich style) so if they need they can get away and im sure youll be happy woth them!

loads of character.

I second the call for Clown Loaches.
Cant really think of anything else that could go with a GT -_-

No, No - although i can disagree with others opinion, i have respect for people who share their experiences, and I am in no way saying that set up was ok - they were well maintained and never got sick - just a "little" crowded. I don't consider myself an expert, but if I see that the fish are ok and happy, i'm happy. If i could afford it i'd buy a gold red tail arowana..but those are going for $2000CND for an 8 inch fish. There are about 6 of them in stock at one LFS and another 8 in the store right beside it! If I had the space - i wouldn't mind revisitng history with that set up again, just in a much larger aquarium, and minus the silver and add the gold redtail. They looked magnificent living together, and it was such an odd "community". But i've been told that old set up was all luck that they didn't kill eachother - not skill.

The manager at the LFS was amazed that the arowana did not develop drop eye and that he co-existed with the other occupants so well.

hmm..

how quickly do clarias catfish grow? there's a sub adult at the store I work at, but I know that they could potentially outgrow my tank. Right now he's alright, should I try throwing him in? I'll be off to university in a year and a half, how much larger could a 6 inch clarias grow?

If that's a no-go, what about a pim? a sun/eclipse cat? any eels? a fire eel might be nice to have...

loving your opinions! : D The clown loach troop does sound like a cute idea, although I'm a bit apprehensive about trying them again. Tried before I knew what I was doing and lost the bunch.
