i have a 12 gallon tank, would the 125 gallon filter hurt the tank if i rant it with the filter that is already in it? i want to jumpstart the cyclying process.

Should be OK as far as the tank is concerned but i expect the flow will be too strong for any fish in the 12 gal.

For your tank size - i would suggest 3 species with 4 of each, preferrably with a ration of 1 male to 3 females to cut down the aggression.

breeding has a good chance of ocurring with the right water conditions. the balance wouldnt be affected until the fry were close to adulthood. that is if your other species dont eat the fry fist.

A Heater

Sorry couldn't resist but it is that simple, 78F or thereabouts - Mbuna are not too fussy on temp. 200 Watts should be plenty for a 4 footer and if you're talking about the 12 gal, 100W or even 50W will be fine.
