Maturing A New Filter Quickly

i'm no expert but i've trawled this forum for 2 days! running both your old and new filters in the same tank is a good idea to allow the new media to mature. this will allow your good bacteria to colonise your new filter without reducing your current colony (this can cause big problems)

why do you have a new filter?

for a faster flow rate simply place old filter media in the new filter casing.

i have known of people placing half old and half new media in the new filter for a while to allow the new to be colonised and changing the other half at a later date.

need more info on why you are replacing filter etc. hope this helps, even if its only a little!

it is only a small 12" cube tank so my usual water change from my larger tank would be more than enough to fill it.

Using water from another tank wont cycle it. It'll make no difference whatsoever, so no - it's pointless. Only way to do it is to clone another filter (ie use filter media from an established filter, or squeeze established media onto new media) or run a filter in your established tank for a couple of weeks prior to setting up the new one.

thanks for the advice lisa, think i mite take some of the media out of one of my two filters in the other tank. The sponge filter for the new tank is only roughly about 4" x 1 1/2". :good:

using the water from your larger tank will ensure you have the same water qualities making transfer of fish easier / safer. but you probably wont be able to maintain the water same qualities for very long if the tank volume is tiny as your dimensions suggest. Lisa i right about the water making no difference to cycling your filter.

personally i would run your new filter in your old tank as lisa and i have previously suggested.

placing some gravel / substrate from your old tank into your new one may help populate it more quickly. Not much good if you're using the small tank for a breeding / fry tank as a bare bottomed tank is advised.

whats the smaller tank with new filter going to be used for?

im for setting up a planted tank for maybe a betta or something else, open to suggestions from anyone. Got the tank from PFK and gonna try to set it up similar to theirs (november 2006 issue) maybe using silver sand instead with different plants.
