8 hrs is fine, after 12 hrs the bacteria starts to die off, but doesn't die off completely for some time afterwards

all your colleague would need to do is put it in some container with fish tank water, an d on your lunch break give the container a shake about (make sure the containers water tight or that'll be messy!)
