Hi guys

I've got a couple of things that have happened over the last few days that have left me scratching my head...

My tanks little ammonia blip sorted itself out which im now certain was due to a ph crash as once I upped it, it seemed to sort itself out. So I thought I'd treat myself and get a couple of showpiece fish for my tank.

I went to Oasis in Manchester and after much thought and a discussion with one of the chaps there ended up with a pair of apistogramma agassizii (1m & 1f)...truly stunning fish.

I also added a few fresh plants which I'd ordered and at the same time there were some tiny but really beautiful Vietnamese cardinal's which I got 5 of. They were all very small, about 1cm long and I thought they'd add some energy and colour to the tank.

So first things first... The cardinal's went in and were zapping about - albeit very high up in the tank, practically on the surface. They didn't seem distressed but I thought it was strange how they were so high up. Some reading up on them found apparently they do hang around quite high in the tank so I thought this was normal....

Until today - I got back from work and can only see 1.... He's currently shoaling along with my neons... Now the sad news is I've found 2 remains of them at the bottom, but 2 are still unaccounted for. I'm very confused about this? I know theyre tiny but from what I've read they are also fairly hardy. The only thing I thought was whether they'd been sucked in the filter inlet since its quite a powerful one and they are so small I can imagine them slipping through the holes.... but it's right at the bottom corner of the tank and they haven't been anywhere near it when I've watched them!

So yeah I'm pretty gutted about this, has anyone had any experience with these? Could they have been attacked?

The only culprits could be 2 dwarf gouramis or the dwarf cichlids... I cant imagine the neons, sterbai's or pitbull plecs I have attacking them?

Now my second story... Yesterday while feeding the fish i noticed the female agassizii was nowhere to be seen. Feeling confused I moved a few plants, lifted a ceramic cave I have, lifted the bogwood...nothing.

So today after worrying most of the day, she is yet again nowhere to be seen this time I literally turned the tank upside down looking (and at the same time found the 2 cardinals  ) ... After about half an hour of moving everything, shifting plants around and generally making a small mess, I'd given up. But she was too big of a fish (even though she's not big) to just go missing.

So after that, I dry myself, sit down to eat my tea, look round and...... She's there!! :S

Has anyone ever had this? Im totally confused..... how and why has she managed to do this?!

The same happened to one of my blue Moscow Guppies, one day fine, second day looked OK, not ill and still fed well. By the third day I couldn't find him at all. Maybe he died in the night and the cories and my BN pleco saw a free meal?

Either way, I've had no ill repercussions to my tank, water quality spotless. I would put any money that they died and your pit bulls saw a free meal (as well as your Gouramis I bet).

Wait a sec :p Just read the last bit of your post.. #40##... At least you found your agassizii!

Yeah, the cichlid has appeared thank god! But the cardinals unfortunately not :( really surprised they have just basically all died within a matter of days. My ammonia and nitrite is 0, nitrate no higher than 10.

How are you acclimatising your new fish, OP? You might find you need to spend a lot more time doing this, if you keep losing new fish. Drip acclimatising is always the best method.

These cardinal's are the first new fish I've lost.... I did lose the apisto, but in the sense that she was hiding! And after finding her tonight she's now back off hiding wherever she was... Still haven't figured it out!!

All I've been doing is floating the bag in tank water, and adding a cup full of water every 20 minutes or so for about an hour, then netting them out carefully and popping them in... I did this with the cardinals, and even took about 90 mins actually, adding water every 30 minutes... They probably had a longer acclimatisation than any others I've put in...

Could your apisto be pregnant? Have read they can be aggressive when pregnant & hide away in caves, etc. just trying to think 'outside the box' as so to speak
Sorry for your losses though & hope you get it sorted.
I lost a male Siamese fighting fish overnite with no traces left the following day so I'm not surprised!!!
