I've never had a problem with bogwood in my tank.
Until recently. Does anyone know if bogwood soaks up the chemicals from fin rot treatment?
Also, after putting the chemicals in the tank, my clown Loach and elephant nose fish got stuck in the hole in the bogwood and were quite ill.
We took the bogwood out and put it outside in a plastic bag (there was nowhere else to put it) and put it back in the tank, and according to my brother that made the rest of the fish ill.
Is this true?
8 fish have died in the past couple of days, including my elephant fish which I'm very very sad about. Now left with 15 fish.
Size of the tank: 150l
Bearing in mind I didn't do all this, my older brother and mum did this..

First thing I'd start with is the tank is too small for the fish you have. Which is more than likely to be the cause of the illness.

But no, bogwood does not effect anything. So long as you know it's came from a safe source.

Do you have a water test kit like a master api freshwater kit?

They've been in that tank since December and they were all fine until my brother put fin rot treatment in there..
I know you're supposed to get a sperate tank for treating but he didn't listen to me..
My brothers been blaming my mum for killing the fish, but it's not the bogwood that's causing the problem then? So that means he has no right to blame them.
150L is a very large tank; and I was told it was perfectly fine for those fish..
Bearing in mind they are very small at the moment and if needed we will be upgrading to a larger tank.

I am unsure how to test the water. The ph was down at 5 the other day
The bogwood we've had since December too.
We got it from pets at home which is a very large pets store with branches all across England.

Why were you adding fin rot medication in the first place? Was there a clear sign of fin rot?
 
150 liters is still a small tank. Clown loaches and elephant fish need a tank AT LEAST 500 liters of size, and the bigger the better.
 
You should really get a proper water testing kit, as they is no way of knowing how the water is without testing it.
 
How often do you do water changes?

One of the gouramis had a very clear sign of fin rot so he put the treatment in.
We do water changes frequently, like every week.
I will get a proper water testing kit. Will let my brother know that he needs one.
Would the tank be play for now, seeing as they are only very very small at the moment and once they start getting bigger I will get a bigger tank?
I know this isn't the cause of the death because they have been fine since December

Most local fish stores will sell fish that aren't suitable for the tank size. The more fish they sell you the bigger there paycheck you see. Larger chains are very unhelpful and it bugs me silly

Anyhow, list what fish you have left. Do a large 50% water change to remove any ammonia build up from dead fish and get a test kit asap. Avoid the test strips, they are cheaper but for a reason.

A couple of days ago the pleco wasn't sucking and was lying on his side;bwe moved him to another tank and then he perked up. Now in that tank he's doing the same.

Ok, we recently (yesterday) did around 40% water change and it seems ok now and none of the fish are dying anymore in that tank. My other tank however, the fish seem to be becoming ill.

Original tank:
5 glowlight tetras
2 platys (I think)
2 Indian gouramis
1 rainbow fish

Other tank:
Fighter fish
2 corydoras
A pleco (10cm)
Clown loach (around 4cm)

The Elephant Nose belongs to the family Mormyridae which 99% of the time are extremely sensitive to medication treatments. I don't think I've read any product to treat 'this and that' that doesn't have a warning on it to not be used with types of Mormyrids.

I'd explain further but phone typing is annoying so have a little browse on google about the family.

Well bogwood can be used to bring pH levels down


Are you 100% sure it's bogwood? Not two toned of colour? Can you post a picture? Did you soak it first? Where did the pH of 5 come from? That's very low..

At the time of the outbreak, did you add any fish recently before? How long before?
The Gourami with the fin rot, was it being attacked by anything. Did it have any wounds?
