I had fresh water tanks for many years and three months ago started my first 90 gal marine tank . I had some good advice and guidance on the startup, cycles, live rock, filters, protein skimmer etc. The water quality was excellent so three weeks ago I added 4 green chrome damsels. Last week I added a yellow tang and a maroon clown. For the week, everybody seemed fine. Actually they all still seem to be fine but the maroon clown has developed a strange behavior. For the first couple of days he/she swam freely around the tank and favored a particular notch in the rocks. For the past three days, he spends a good part of the day hiding behind the protein skimmer. I was wondering: is this is an unusual behavior or a sign of something being wrong?

Might be a sign of bullying. Either way, not a normal behavior for a maroon.

aye keep eye on ya clown, i've got one green chromis and its no bother, not sure how a squad of them will behave but what i do know is clowns and damsels arnt really best buddys (same family) also keep a eye on ya yellow tang, can be very territorial and is a semi aggressive fish, i would reconsider your fish stock and maybe think of a mate for your clown. :drinks:

The maroon I had before my current one exhibited a similar behaviour before dying. I eventually identified the cause, to a reasonable degree of certainty, as cyanide poisoning. I agree with the above; keep an eye on ya clown.

a follow up: He's behind the skimmer less and less. An he eats like a horse.

Sounds more like it... Keep an eye on him/her that it doesn't go too far to the other end of the spectrum and turn into a bigtime bully
