Hello

I have tried to set up a marine tank, but the money involved is just stupid and half way through I ran out of it. It has been running dark and cold for a while and we do actually have some critters in there from the live rock, but my daughter accidentially switched the filter back on this morning and released a foul smelling liquid into the tank which has killed everything but the algae now (and some snails - even in marine tanks they seem to be unkillable, lol). So I have decided to turn it back to tropical now.

Problem is, I am skint. I cannot afford to replace the filter material or the equipment. I am currently soaking the filter material in hot water, to get rid of the smell.

The Powerhead wont be necessary anymore, I probably wont be able to use the rocks, and I do have a whole bag of Playsand which will be plenty as gravel. Plants I am getting for free from a friend, fish we will see about. Tropical fish really aren't that expensive.

So, what can I do about the Filter material ? Do I just rinse it well and then reuse it ? I have a spare bag of floss, so I can replace the white stuff, but I can't replace the blue sponges, might be able to find some of the coarse stuff in the shed.

The tank just needs a good wash and dry ?

Should I play it safe and go for Guppies to start with ? As theya re slightly salt tolerant, in case there is any salt left in the system ?

What plants are salt tolerant (not that I have a big choice)

Cheers

Time to kill some snails and the remaining star fish :-(

can you not give the star fish to someone a shp or local aqaurium?

I wish, but to be honest, there is no LFS open in the area right now and most of them croaked it when the filter emptied anyway. And they are also common as muck, a bit like shrimp in FW tanks. It did make me feel horrible, as starfish are so beautiful, but they are gone now.
