Hello People!

I would like to start a marine aquarium but not sure what they are. I've heard about saltwater, fresh water, and brackish? I would like to get a puffer fish to go in there, likely by itself, but I've only just noticed how many other fantastic fish you can buy. Like box fish and triggers. So my questions are:

Can puffer fish mix with other fish?
Are they saltwater, freshwater or brackish?
What fish would they mix with?
What out of saltwater, freshwater and brackish is easiest to maintain?
What size tank would I need to house a puffer plus a few other?

Please help

Thanks very much

George

Hi George

A marine aquarium is a saltwater (seawater) aquarium.
There are puffers that come from fresh, salt and brackish waterways.
Some puffers can live with other fish but some are really obnoxious and will eat anything put in with them. It depends on the species.
Freshwater is generally easier to keep than salt or rackish but I consider them all the same. They just get set up differently.
If you keep pygmy puffers then they can live in a 100litre tank but some of the bigger puffers need 500+ litre tanks.

Your best bet is to find a picture or scientific name of some puffers that you like. Then post them here and people can give you information about those fish.

A white belly puffer would be quite nice, perhaps with a yellow box, what other fish would you suggest?

White belly puffer... after searching google I found only the south American puffer. Many puffers have a white belly; do you have a scientific name?

Nope sorry I can't find it either, it's just the local pet shop, has one on their stock list, but there is not scientific name, I've seen a picture of a starry puffer (Arothron stellatus) they look really nice, are they really bright yellow with a blue tail?

http://www.waterzoo.co.uk/Marine/Marine%20...tock%20list.htm on that page there is a picture of one about 2/3rds of the way down.

Will they go with any other fish?

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated

Arothron puffers are typically docile towards fish, but their powerful jaws are capable of making quick work of most motile invertebrates. They may be able to be kept with corals, and the largest of snails (cowries spring to mind).
