Male Guppys..

Good day all, thought i'd post a quick topic now that my first 2 fish (and shrimp!) are in the tank.

All 3 inhabitants seem happy enough. The shrimp found the food pellet i dropped in there specifically for him. Yet it's the 2 male guppys behaviour that has me a little concerened.

Water parameters are all as they should be, '0's across the board, the slightest hint of orange on my nitrAte APL test kit... and PH behaing itself. Everything i have learnt as should be.

Now, concerning these two male guppys, they're mental. They literally do swim to the bottom of the tank then as quick as possible swim up into the downward flow of my filter exhaust, not constantly, but a fair bit of the time.

At other times they swim close to the surface (not 'gasping' though, thankfully!) then suddenly dart about at lightning speed...
A few days during my fishless cycle i spotted a good few dozen tiny worms, 2/3mm long, white and the width of a human hair.... didn't think of them as much of a problem,they disappeared after a 50% W.C, but they appeared again the morning of my final 'Qualifying Week'. The guppys went beserk after the worms, clearing the tank within mins, so i have decided against feeding them for a day or two.

Anyway, does anyone have any male guppys which have displayed such behaviour? Can anyone see any sign of concern?

Sounds like usual (slightly retarded) guppy behavior, they are not exactly known to be geniuses.

Still, post ALL the set-up details, just to be sure. Photo will help too.

The little white wormy things are perfectly harmless. In tanks you get a mini eco system of "bugs" living it in alongside your fish.

My fish generally eat them . However I do get over-run in my newt tank as they kindly don't eat them.

It is a 30L, Aqua One corner curved unit and Aqua One filter that was cycled with household ammonia (took roughly 5 weeks).. my Interpet heater is set to 27 degress, with Ph at 7.2 (7.4 out of the tap).

I do not have it planted yet, but i am hoping that once i have my tank 'running like my own little bit of stream' then real plants will be the next step.

Thank you for your comment on guppys general intellect. I could almost picture their behaviour portrayed in a Finding Nemo film! They are, after a good few hourse observation, as thick as a whale omlette!


Just been down for a little look and they are 'swimming' in the current of the filter outlet, couple of mm below the surface. If my hand or body goes near the tank, they stop.
What weird little creatures these fish turned out to be!

I would lower the temperature to 22-23°C, that will calm them down a bit and they'll live for longer.

Apart from that, they're probably freaking out slightly because the tank is bare and not particularly large. They'll change when you add the plants. Give me a shout when you start looking for plants, I might have some spare.
